Is it ABC or NBC? You have to watch this

Why is it so much fun to watch others nosedive? In what was probably her first and last interview, Merry Miller from ABC News, yes ABC, not NBC (watch until the end), “interviews” Holly Hunter.

Prepare for the same feeling you get when you see someone kicked in the crotch.

Plastic bags getting trashed

I’m not a plastic bag

A trend is happening in Canada, as I’m sure it is in other parts of the world as well. What we would normally lug our groceries and shopping goods home in, those un-eco friendly plastic bags, are being replaced with designer friendly reusable bags.

President’s Choice has been running ads over the past month proclaiming their mission to divert 1 billion plastic bags from our landfills. And others like Holt Renfrew and Urban Outfitters have created some of the most sought after grocery bags ever. Holt happened to sell out of their entire stock the morning of release, and the $18 Anya Hindmarch designed item, which is now sold out in the US as well, is still fetching upwards of $100 on eBay.

When it comes to organization, does paper beat computer?

Seinfeld

I’ve used Google Calendar, off and on, Ta-da lists, off and on, and every other organization app, off and on.

The problem: they’re easy to forget. I’d use it faithfully for a few days, then be away from my computer one day and completely forget to use it the next. Like most things in life, productivity and organization can resemble a rollercoaster.

So I think it may be time for a little old-school practice. Thanks to both Jerry Seinfeld and Lifehacker, I’m giving the ginormous calendar on the wall approach a try. Here’s how Seinfeld said it works:

Check out our beer glasses

Beer Glasses

After picking up a few brewskies yesterday, I had remembered our YGG glasses from Crystal Occasion. They had requested a review from us back in March, we accepted, and they were kind enough to send us a set of 4 English Ale glasses, branded with the YGG mark. I meant to shoot a pic and write a post way back when, but completely forgot about it.

So here it is, in all it’s malty glory. A huge thanks to Crystal Occasion for sending these to us, and a huge recommendation from YGG to anyone that needs any branded glasses or crystal.

Now, back to enjoying my beer.

We love Snipshot

Snipshot

You’re away from your office or at a meeting. You need to crop an image for a presentation, or your exclusive blog post that Arrington will envy. All you have is a simple computer, and nowhere near enough time or patience to install a Photoshop trial. What do you do?

You could play around in MS Paint, hoping that your image is within a few hundred pixels of size as to what you were after.

Or, you could visit Snipshot, the only free, simple, online, cropping tool I’ve ever seen that allows you to perform precise resizing.

From a creative that’s been stuck in his client’s office many times with an image editing app nowhere in sight, Snipshot has been godsend on many occasions.

Add this goody to your bookmarks for the time’s you’re stuck with your friend or client’s crappy computer and have a naked blog post begging for an image.

Hey Ron Paul-ies, ease up a little

Ron Paul

This’ll probably result in Paul-ies (Ron Paul groupies) storming the comments, but I had to share this. You’ve seen videos and praise of the Presidential hopeful on Digg and all the other game-able networks, but this one takes the cake.

Get your ballot ready, as I present, the Ron Paul rEVOlution brushes. Yes brushes. As in little headshots of Ron Paul that you would use in Photoshop or Illustrator.

Being that I’m writing about this “viral marketing” you can label it as that, but I mean, come on, brushes?!?

What ever happened to relevancy in communications? Will graphic designers be the deciding factor in next year’s election. We’ll just have to wait and see. (ftw)

The most annoyingly amusing ringtone you’ll ever hear. Get it while it lasts.

Chacarron

I fell in hate with this song as soon as I saw it on Digg last night. Wikipedia says:

“Macarron Chacarron (usually shortened to Chacarron) is a hit Spanish-language song by El Chombo feat. Andy’s Val Gourmet, both artists from Panama.”

It seems to have been released in the UK in late 2006, and from a guy that’s wasted many hours of his life watching mindless videos, I surprisingly missed this one. Luckily, or unluckily, I think so did most of the mainstream North American market.

So to piss off everyone around me and ring a fad as dry as I possibly can, I’ve created a ringtone (mp3) that your friends and family will just adore.

Download the normal length version here.

Download the lengthier version here.

You know the drill…….right-click, save as, then either upload it to your phone via cable (if you have one) or e-mail it to your mobile number (talk to your carrier about that).

If you’d like to see the music video that made this a “hit”, you can see it here.

9 things I learned about business from The White Stripes

The White Stripes

About a week ago, I managed to squeeze in a concert right after work. The White Stripes were nearing the end of their Canadian tour and made a stop in Toronto, before heading East to celebrate their 10th anniversary in Nova Scotia.

The venue for the event, The Molson Amphitheatre, wasn’t ideal for such a band, but Jack and Meg made the most of it to nearly a full house.

While trying to dodge the effects of beer marked up well over 200%, I made some mental notes on the concert and how The White Stripes performed as a business, as opposed to a band.

Here are some of the points/lessons I pulled from the concert, or at least what I could remember:
