The death of Feedburner?

It’s rumored that Google is going to acquire Feedburner. Well - I guess that’s it for them. I’m thinking most bloggers are with me when I say “Google placed ads in my feed? F**k that”.

I hope they don’t plan on spamming our feed with ads, but it’s only logical. You can’t spend a wad of cash to acquire a product that has no potential ROI. Oh well, it’s just a matter of time until a new, ad free Feedburner clone comes out and steals the show.

    You don’t need ROI to justify a purchase… look at YouTube! :) (Or, more seriously, Urchin? Blogger?) At least FeedBurner has some services it can (and does successfully) make money off. I think I have faith that if it does happen, we won’t see it destroyed.

    I think common sense says purchasing FB and “spamming feeds with ads” would be among the most effective things Google could do to piss off an absurdly large portion of the web community. (Accordingly, I don’t see it happening.)

    I think its just a case of them wanting to track even more activity on the web.

    With their search engine they already know what you’re looking for. With Google Analytics, and the purchase of Doubleclick, they can track the websites you visit, and ads you see and click on (in addition to their Adsense system).

    If this purchase does happen they will be able to track what RSS feeds you subscribe too and read.

    I think think google is smart enough not to put ads in people feeds without asking. I can see them integrating it with adsense making it easier for people to put ads into their feeds.

    I agree. Google knows what a popular tool feedburner is, and I don’t think they would go ruin it by forcing ads into feeds. I think the data that they’ll be able to gather (as Google is really in the information business) will be more valuable to them in the long run.
