YGG wants you to ROCK in 2008

We decided to ring in the New Year with a fun contest featuring a game that has taken the world by storm. I'm a huge fan of the game, and the few hours each day I'm not on YGG, I'm obsessively rockin' away with it. That game of course is Guitar Hero 3. YGG is giving away a brand spankin' new copy of the game with guitar for your platform of choice (Wii, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360).

That sounds great! But what's the catch?

If only all contests were this easy. All you have to do is post a comment below telling us how music ties into your entrepreneurial life.

  • What type of music do you listen to while working?
  • Which bands get you pumped?
  • How and where do you listen to music?
  • Do you tie any genres into different tasks?
  • etc… Be creative!

What we're looking for is the most interesting response as to how music plays

canadian pharmacy cialis

a role in your business life. That's it.

The details of this giveaway

Al entries (comments) up until January 18 (my birthday) will be considered. The panel of judges you see below will pick the most interesting and/or informative response collectively.

Justin Simmons

Travis Young

So let's hear how music and entrepreneurship melodically coincide in your life, and one of you will be named a YGG Guitar Hero.

I generally listen to Sirius, channel 26 (Left of Center) and 21 (Alt Nation).

I listen to more indie/mellow stuff when working, and more mainstream music when I’m just messin’ around on the internet.

I save the hardcore puke-while-you-scream-and-bleed music for when I read YGG… it gets me pumped!

Anytime I’m at my computer, I have music playing.

When I’m writing code, I usually like my music fast and loud - it helps me get pumped up and into my groove. Just about anything by Metallica, Aerosmith, or Ozzy will do.

When I’m just surfing the internet, reading blogs, or checking email, I’ll usually go for something a little more laid back like Cake or Blues Traveler, or sometimes I’ll tune into an indie rock station.

While working, I typically pump up some good hard rock, metal, or punk. Bad Religion, Killswitch Engage, Most Precious Blood, and various other bands. In the car, I listen to Sirius Faction(28), Octane(20), and HardAttack(27). I can pump it up loud and make the ride much better with some rockin’ tunes.

I get pumped on good music with a message, be it political, personal, forceful, whatever it may be. Music that tells a story better than I ever could, engages me to listen, think, and sometimes act on emotions or curiosity.

Music for me is like having a conversation with my soul. It shapes me, it shapes my work day, it shapes my creativity when I need that push to do better work. Music allows me to fall into my own state of mind and progressively work smarter, better, and more productively.

For coding, I like to listen to some fast-paced metal or hard rock. For design related projects, I tend to listen to more indie type stuff that flows well with good lyrics. For general surfing of the web, I usually listen to Alt-X on iTunes radio, good blend of music for me.

Music can really make you happy, sad, angry, powerful, bullet-proof, vulnerable, and inferior all at the same time. Some people use it as a crutch, others use it as a stepping stone of progression.

Music has done more to shape our country than any presidential candidate could ever do in a lifetime. It has spawned trends, mottos, sayings, slang, fashion disasters, culture wars, and many other facets.

Music is the one global language that everyone can understand. We may all have different tastes in music, but we all know why we like it, and we all like it for our own intertwined reasons.

Cue up the mic’s, I’m about to rock!

When I’m in my cube rockin’ on the spreadsheets,
I got my boys Mozart and Beethoven strokin’ the keys.
But it doesn’t stop there because I got my inbox in overdrive,
Jay-Z, Linkin Park and Kanye keepin’ up with the keyboard jive.
Now there are times when I want to chill,
So Jack Johnson and the boys keep it real.
On my way home I’m blastin’ in the commuter,
Hip-hop and rock remind me I’m away from the computer.
I’ve sang my tune about how my day goes,
Pick me so I can become the best of Guitar Heroes.

While designing, I listen to chill/lounge/indie music like B-Tribe, Buddha Bar, Thievery Corporation, Infected Mushroom and Godspeed You Black Emperor!

While coding anything, gotta have some rock. From Led Zeppelin to Rage Against the Machine and anything in between, especially System of a Down and Serj’s new album.

I love music. Its like an orgasm in the ear. I love IMEEM and Pandora of course. Two sites I cant live without…

I don’t listen to too much music, but I sure as hell love playing games like Guitar Hero :).

I listen to a blend of rock, hip-hop, and wayback playbacks. Bands like Hedley, Fallout Boy, 3 Doors Down, and stuff get me pumped. I just bought a huge set of headphones to listen to my music at my desk - otherwise there’s tunes everywhere, in my car, laptop, Zune, etc.

I use music as a productivity tool.

I choose an album to play that suits the style of work I’m going to be doing, then I play it start to finish. When it finishes (bit under an hour generally) I’ll get up and have a quick break, stretch the legs or get something to eat, then I’ll sit back down, choose a new album, and work the next session. Rinse and repeat.

Guitar Hero would be sure to have an impact on the productivity, but it would be a welcome one :)

I know I can’t win, but music is a huge part of my life. It doesn’t depend on what I’m doing so much, it’s more that I have a music for every mood. Unless I’m working out, then it’ll be a “tear your face off” kind of playlist. Aside from that, it ranges from Sinatra to Rise Against to Between the Buried and Me or Human Abstract. Either way, I’m always listening to something. A huge highlight for me was when my favorite band, All That Remains had a song in the bonus section of Guitar Hero 2, played that one a few times, to say the least.

Some great responses so far. Keep them coming!!! Less than 10 days to go.

    Music?
If people could have a soundtrack for their life, I will be one of these!

The radio it’s waking me up in the morning, then I’m singing and dancing in the shower one of my favorite song (I promised no animal or person have been auditively attack by the fact i’m signing really bad…)

Next I’m opening up my computer and start M2Radio (its a “dance and hit” streaming radio) to prepare myself for my day.

Along the day, while I’m working, I’ll switch between M2Radio and my Itunes library listening to :
    - old Rock like Genesis, Pink Floyd or Queen
    - Rammstein and Marylin Manson (when I’m really pissed off)
    - Coldplay and t r y ^ d (when I’m feeling nostalgic or sad )

Music help me to focus on my work and get it done in a positive way.

In fact I’m listening to a LOT of type of music, but I prefer Alternative and Dance (I know, it’s a “little bit” different…. =P). But I hate country and music where the lead singer is “screaming something”…

When I’m not on my computer, My TV or the radio its always open and I’m listenin to, guess what, music! (I hate to hear a silencious house - even if I can’t really “hear” it …. )

And sometimes, when I’m going to bed, i’m listening to music to relax.

I tried Guitar Hero 3 on Christmas and since that famous date, I want to be a rock star!

I promised that if I win, I will not sing while playing ;)

What type of music do you listen to while working? For me, it’s bands like Against Me!, Smoking Popes, Alkaline Trio & Jawbreaker. Basically, punk bands that aren’t TOO offensive. Since I have a door, I can get away with it more than others would.
Which bands get you pumped? Same as above, but also including bands like Strung Out, Good Riddance, etc. Something that will make me want to sing along, or just roll down the windows and listen to it much louder than I should.
How and where do you listen to music? Everywhere. I set up my home network to have my 30,000+ MP3 collection stream to anyplace I spend more than 10 minutes in, so I can always have something listening to. Then there’s always the music in my head….
Do you tie any genres into different tasks? I have some playlists set up for certain things, like working out at the gym and whatnot. And sometimes, the mood will strike me to listen to something more mellow or more aggressive.
Be creative! Well, I named my son Cash, in honor of Johnny Cash. How’s that strike ya, Bob?

I listen to music whenever I work, keeps me going and my brian occupied during the boring tasks.

My music range if from calssical to metal, from jazz to hip-hop.

Quite the range but it never gets boring.

Keep the entries coming, still going until January 18.

Chromeo in the AM to get the day going, it makes me feel cool, like I actually want to get up and been seen.

In the late Morning and early afternoon, is a combination of Amy Winehouse, Muse, Justice, Gorillaz or a mix by 1Method. These choices are crucial, it dictates how my workflow for the day. Amy and Justice for steady projects, Muse, Gorillaz and 1Method for multitasking.

After lunch, I throw on Bloc Party and next time I look up it’s time for me to go home for the day.

As soon as I get into my car on my way home I pop in Jay-Z, “’cause I’m a hustler baby!”

I guess it’s unfortunate for me that I share the same first name as a YGG founder, and the same last name as a prolific short slacks-wearing rocker. For about 3 seconds I thought I was judging this contest, and was thusly disappointed that I couldn’t enter. Not anymore! But damn - I have to think about this for a bit - because as likely not many of you know, I rock the mic myself, occasionally.

I listen to classical music almost exclusively whether I’m working at home or listening to it from my car. And since I enjoy the music most from traditional radio, I listen to it through 102.1 KDFC from San Francisco. I enjoy classical music, because it has no lyrics. With other genres of music, I get distracted by the lyrics. And I don’t want that when I have lots on my mind. Classical music somehow drowns out any distracting background noise and helps me focus on whatever important or urgent task I have.

And as a side effect, I get the Mozart effect. Arguably good for the brain!

When I first read this post I started looking at the music I listen to and thinking about how I would answer this question. I came to one conclusion: If all of the artists, bands, groups and singers that I listen to were brought together at one point in time, there would be an all out war.

This wouldn’t be like bringing Run DMC and Aerosmith together for an anniversary edition of Walk This Way. I can see it now….

T.I. “the Jay-Z of the South” comes out with his crew red hot blasting in all directions.

David Allan Coe having it out with the likes of Will.I.Am, Soulja Boy, Ben Harper, Buddy Guy for obvious reasons.

Snow Patrol comes to the fight wearing the traditional Scottish kilts, immediate blows occur between Korn’s Jonothan Davis for being a poser and playing the bagpipes.

Lauren Hill dishing out her crazy all over the rest of the former Fugees (as well as anyone else that gets closer than 4.12356 ft from her).

Lily Allen jabbing Paul McCartney to bug off and leave her alone and that she doesn’t care if he is divorced now that she thinks he is nasty.

Prince (the symbol of course) is swinging a cane with his symbol atop of it, smashing any and everyone he can in the face with it.

Dolly Parton’s opponents just bounce off of her, so she constantly spins in a circle creating one huge silicone vortex.

The White stripes are present, although it’s hard to tell if they are bloody, or just came wearing matching red outfits.

Bob Dylan’s roadies carry him in and prop him up in a chair against the wall.

While all of this is going on Queen stands on a balcony high above singing, “Another one bites the dust!â€?

Oh, and Jack Johnson’s too laid back for all this violence. He’s just strumming calmly on acoustic out back.

    ———

And because the music I listen to is all over the place I have to filter it in certain situations.

At work it can be just about anything. In the morning something upbeat and loud is good to get myself and everyone else in the office going.

At night I start winding down to some more mellow music like Jack Johnson, and even some Jim Brickman here or there.

Point is, as long as I keep my music organized then every thing’s great.

For a long time I worked at home, and I could never listen to music while I worked unless I was home alone. Then, I got a pair of high quality studio earphones. Now, I can’t work without listening to something. If I am doing something dull and repetitive, I can listen to podcasts, but if I am doing anything that requires coherent thought or concentration, it is music.

I use iTunes (of course). I have a smart playlist setup for all songs never played and never skipped. As I listen to it, the playlist gets smaller, but if I get new music, it grows again. I’ve got some weird stuff on their, it is very eclectic. One of the best things I’ve ever done for my music life is even legal. Every year the SXSW music festival releases a torrent of one or two songs from each of their 1,000 or so showcasing artists. I’ve got 2428 songs from all genres, 99% of which are by artists I’ve never heard of.

It’s a great journey of discovery.

    By the way, happy birthday.
