My computer ate my YGG homework
Sorry about the lack of updates folks. In case you haven’t seen my bitchy rants in the forum or on our Twitter feed, my desktop decided to stop working earlier this week. I use it for absolutely everything, including writing for YGG, and if I’m unable to re-align all the stars, I’m in serious trouble. Tons of recent creative files on there that I don’t have backed up, are at risk of getting wiped out if I can’t sidestep this damn bluescreen asap. I could never recreate them or get the hundreds of hours back I put into making them.
I’m writing this on a spare laptop right now, going through my 20th or so straight hour while my desktop runs through the Symptom Tree, trying to diagnose what the hell happened.
So please hang in there for the next few days, as I try and get all of these impromptu bugs worked out, shell out hundreds more that I didn’t plan to spend, and get back in gear.
Thanks young go getters.
UPDATE: I have a MacBook! My local Apple store had a 2GB model in stock and I was able to grab it in less than 15 minutes. (Very cool staff) I still have at least 3 hard days ahead of me trying to backup and restore my PC, which will still be my powerhouse computer. So all is not well yet.
Nonetheless, I am now officially part of the Apple family and hyped about setting this baby up. A huge thanks to Eric for encouraging me to buy this for the past month or so, and everyone that showed some love in the comments.
Troubleshooting my PC, with a MacBook and keg of Heineken on hand, will sure make for an interesting weekend. :)

I’m sending your computer “feel better” vibes. I was there very recently and there is a whole circle of hell devoted to computer problems. One problem with working from home is that you can’t just call the IT department and take the rest of the day off. :(
Good luck!

Haha…thought something was up when you didn’t post in a long time Travis. You might want to plug in your hard-disk as a slave into a spare PC and make a backup of your data before you do anything else.

Do we need to start a “Buy Travis a MacBook Pro Fund” ?

My prayers are with you. Without my laptop I am no longer a human.

I would totally contribute to that fund.

Thanks so much for your kind words.
Been running the Symptom Tree app in Window’s startup options — 10 hours since it started — looks like the memory or DIMM slots are the issue. They’re the only red x’s so far. At it’s current pace, at least another 6 hours before the testing is done.
I’m heading over to the Apple store in a couple hours to give it a final hands-on, then order it, and it should arrive by next Thursday, they said. Hopefully I’ll be able to fix my PC before them.
I’ll keep everyone updated. Thanks again for stickin’ guys and gals. You’re the best damn community out there! :)

I hate computer issues, I feel you.
Even since I switched to Apple, I have had no problems though! :)
Sending good vibes as well, was wondering why there were not as many postings! :)

Typing this on a Macbook in my local Apple store. They have the 2gb model I want in stock. So I’m walking out of here with a new computer today. Woo-hoo! No need to wait for shipping.
This is going to be a tiring weekend. ;)

Congratulations! I bought a MacBook in July (traded it in for a MacBook Pro for the LED Backlight) and I loved it to bits. It’s a stellar laptop, I think you’ll be suprised.

And Travis is seduced by the Mac……..:p

I don’t mean to be a jerk, but anyone who works on a computer for a living and doesn’t have an up to date back up of their entire harddrive deserves to lose their files.

or maybe this was just the universe telling you that you should be working on a mac.

woo,
I don’t think anyone deserves to lose their files. That’s pretty harsh.
I did push the limits and this experience resulted in me picking up a backup harddrive and finally getting a Macbook. So albeit stressful, I’m still a business geek that had some files at risk…….a walk in the park compared to what many people have to live through each day. No question.
If nothing ever went wrong in life you’d never learn anything. Lesson learned on my part.

You can do it!

Was that a Windows pun I just read?

maybe saying you deserved it was a bit harsh. All i know is that nothing gets the backup habit happening quicker than losing a bunch of data you can’t afford to lose.

I love my macbook! I will never ever in a million years go back to PC.
You will love it!
