MySpace…WTF?

Rupert Murdoch

How many of you MySpace account holders have seen something similar to the image below? It happens about 1/2 the time I login to their dreadful service. A screen pops up only for a few seconds that would appear to be a spot for a huge, obtrusive, obnoxious flash add. There’s a link on the top and bottom of that area that says “Skip this advertisement” but apparently News Corp’s MySpace is so intuitive, it already knows you’re planning on clicking it so it skips the add…wait for it…automatically! Now how’s that for high tech?

MySpace missing advertising

If I was the guy paying for that spot I’d have a conniption fit, and if Rupert Murdoch was dead, he’d be rolling over in his grave.

You’re better off advertising at Young Go Getter. Seriously.

I believe that if you are using Internet Explorer, set to “Allow everything Myspace wants to throw at me” you would see an ad there - instantly.

But IE users with security set to Medium High or higher, as well as all FireFox / No Script users don’t.

It’s Mr. Murdock’s fault that the would advertisement isn’t being displayed, myspace is beyond FireFox/Safari/Opera hostile. SRYSLY.

MySpace isn’t on a good streak are they? Add stupid advertising model to the list too then.

There was also more news of them busting up 3rd party developers today - “TellThem” was the next of the crowd to get the Murdoch boot. Their advice at the end of an announcement was simple… “switch to Facebook.”

    Switch to Facebook indeed, amen.

I created a profile on MySpace when it first came out, haven’t done anything with it since.

Been giving Facebook a chance for a couple months, and have no idea how people get off on seeing their friends go back and forth between photos for their main pic.

I guess in the same way that we get a buzz from front-paging Digg or going hot on other big sites, having a huge friend list can be egotistically gratifying.

Bah, I wouldn’t know! I personally think myspace is the scum of the internet, and has created a big ugly black spot for designers to cringe at every once in a while.

Let’s not forget the “Download,” “Rate,” and “Comment” links in the music player don’t work in anything but IE.

    Myspace is embarrassingly broken.
