Don’t give the same thing to everyone

Junk Mail

Every single day, I go to get the mail, and next to my mailbox sits a garbage can, filled to the top with the exact same things. New condominium fliers, special offers, government newsletters.

If the postman were observant, he would put all this junk directly in that trashcan instead of our mailboxes. If the post office weren’t so greedy, they’d be honest with the advertisers and how effective these mailers really are.

At times, they think they’re smart, they’ll drop one of these on our doorsteps. Same difference.

When we see that you’re lazy, don’t take the time to think about each of us personally, don’t care if I say no to you, you’re immediately blacklisted. All the “thought”, time, and money you put into buying that mailing list, crafting that copy, acquiring those stock photos, running them off the press, a complete waste.

Had you sent me a simple, personal, creative, and genuine letter, you would have increased your efficiency ten-fold. Sure, thousands of others may have received similar letters, but I don’t know or care about that — look, I got this nice letter and great offer, just for me.

Eliminate the term “mass” from your vocabulary. Each of your customers are more important than all of your customers. And existing customers are more important than potential customers.

In everything you do, “Hey Travis” will get you a lot farther than “Dear valued customer”.

Mark your calendars — Blog Action Day

Our friends over at Freelance Switch have put an enormous amount of thought and effort into creating an event to better this world. We were one of the first sites to commit to it, and hope you will as well.

It’s called Blog Action Day, and the blogging event is scheduled to take place on October 15th. The idea is simple: 1) Write a post about about an issue or solution that relates to the environment. 2) Donate your advertising earnings from that one day to an environmental charity of your choice.

Some large blogs have already hopped on board (GigaOm, Copyblogger, Reddit, and YGG of course :), and we’re sure, at the end of the day, the list will be gigantic and feature every celeb-blogger you can think of, including yourself.

Take a look at the website for Blog Action Day, watch the video above, then immediately register to have your blog participate in the event. As I said, expect the event to have thousands of participants, and hopefully have an impact on our media, government, and personal priorities.

Give and ye shall receive - the secret of being Dugg

Kevin by Thomas Hawk - Flickr

While writing a draft post on a wonderful WordPress plugin, Gregarious — which really wasn’t going anywhere exciting or interesting (probably will remain a draft forever) — I thought about an experiment I’ve been trying for the past several days.

If you Google “make digg homepage“, you’ll see around 10.7 million results. Most of the articles focus on the type of content you should write, catchiness of headlines, adding Digg widgets…….and a bunch of other tips that mean @#!* all if you don’t have a lot of regular readers and/or Diggers.

This experiment I mentioned is based on one of these articles that made the Digg front page a few days ago. Only this time, the author actually seems to know what he’s talking about. Brett Borders of Copybrighter wrote a step-by-step guide, which can be traced back to a simpler version from THE HORSE’S MOUTH, Mr. Calacanis back in December of last year.

Time Silence is money

Silence is money

Over the past year or so I’ve come to the realization that sometimes the most important thing you can do in life is keep your mouth shut. Personally or professionally, employee or employer, it’s in your best interest to keep your cards to yourself.

Too often we feel the urge to share our opinion because we feel entitled to have one. True enough, in the free world it’s your right to have an opinion, but remember: The workplace is a dictatorship, not a democracy. Employees often miscalculate their place or even more dangerously, their relationship with the boss. Before you speak, put yourself on the receiving end of your comment. Without rationalizing, how did it make you feel? You can bet it’ll make them feel the same way. Now with your job on the line, is it worth sharing?

Happy Belated 2nd Birthday YGG

Creepy Elmo

Wow, time sure flies. August 1st was the exact two year marker since Young Go Getter was first created by Eric. I’ve been a member since that day and a partner for a little over a year.

What began as just a phpBB forum, then morphed into a horror-show of iframes (I already apologized, back off!), finally became the WordPress/Vanilla mashup you’ve come to love.

It’ll be interesting to look back on YGG a year from today as we reach triple digits (inside Flight of the Conchords joke). I know it won’t look anything like it does today, but I haven’t the slightest clue what it will look like. Let’s worry about that when the time comes.

So to all of the unbelievable readers, members, and supporters of YGG, two cheers to helping us stay above water for over 700 days and motivating us to keep at it.

That’s right creepy Elmo. Yahoo. We’re 2.

Quick note: New Directory is up

From the feedback we got in the Forum, it was time for an upgrade to the Directory. So I spent the morning building a new direction for it, and went with the gallery format instead of a tag cloud.

We were just looking to give you a reason to drop by there every now and then, and make it easier to view and visit the sites. In my opinion, it looks a helluva lot better.

All of the dead sites were weeded out, and we encourage anyone that would like to be featured in the Directory to take a moment, register in our forum, and we’ll add it for you.

What happened to creating a solution to a problem?

Times Square

“It’s another way for us to engage with our advertisers and our audience” said Chris McCumber, senior VP of marketing and brand strategy for USA.

The preformatted fluff to the right, care of USA Network’s Chris McCumber, is in regards to their latest project (USA Network and NBC Universal) called Didja. Like, “Did ya see that?”. Ha ha, he he, hilarious. Didja is said to be an archive of old and new TV ads, movie trailers, and other stuff that usually interrupts the content you’re trying to enjoy.

“Both efforts are designed to give NBC a bigger share of the ad revenue being generated by streaming video.” Exactly. Didja is being made to help NBC milk a medium for as much as they can.

Look at what TBS has done with Very Funny Ads. They transformed an annual highlight show on their network, into a popular online archive of some of the funniest ads. Conceptually, being that their tagline is “very funny”, such a site ties into their brand perfectly.

50 of the Worst Local TV Ads

Eagle Auto Insurance

You have to thank The Phat Phree for putting this list together. And you have to pity The Phat Phree for having to find and watch every ad in this list.

Odds are you haven’t seen the majority of these, being that some are older, and almost all of them would have been run at off times in small regions.

My observation: small retail, fast food, automotive, and insurance businesses, should be banned from advertising on television.

I would pick a favourite, but it’s so damn tough, when they’re all so great.

The 50 greatest local TV commercials.

Have your mug featured on YGG

Aniston Mug

As I said yesterday, we want to try some new things to increase the interaction and participation here at YGG. One of the ideas I came up with last week was to let the face(s) of our community be the face of our community, literally.

See that mysterious fella’ in the top right corner holding a YGG sign? Yes, that is in fact me, but I’m getting a little sick of myself.

So here’s my idea: shoot a creative picture of yourself holding a YGG sign (see below) and we’ll feature it as our logo. We’ll rotate through all of the submissions so a different young go getter appears each time you view a page.

Maybe we’ll even pick the most creative picture each month and send you a prize.

Being that we tend to be featured in quite a few galleries and articles, depending on who’s pic shows up when the screenshot is taken, you could permanently have your glorious face in some of the popular galleries. That’s D-list stardom right there, baby.
