Soapbox — Competition for YouTube?

Microsoft has been playing catch-up in most of their undertakings. They seem to enjoy the strategy of waiting until someone else is successful and then trying to steal market share away from them. They’re trying to outsmart the iPod with the Zune, and now they’re trying outdo YouTube with a site they call Soapbox.

Online video has been the craze for the past year and will only get bigger over the next few years. YouTube has dominated the scene so far and become the hot spot for just about any pop culture clip.

Soapbox was mentioned in the media a couple weeks ago and I decided to apply for an invite into the beta test. I just received the invite, put the site to test and here’s what I think.

MusicMap

MusicMap is a new interactive site that allows you to explore your music tastes in an abstract way. Somewhat like Pandora, another site we love, you start with one artist and branch out into dozens or hundreds of others that match certain characteristics. If you’re looking for some new tunes to keep you entertained you’ll love this site. We sure do.

My Dream App

Based on a platform much like American Idol, My Dream App is a contest where people suggested ideas for applications and they’re weeded out in a Simon Cowell style. It’s great to see each creative’s process as they refine their application idea and progress through the rounds. We love this site for mixing pop culture and geekdom in a very unique way.

TechCrunch

Chances are anyone and everyone involved in web development and online business has come across this site at least once. Michael Arrington has become the number one web 2.0 reporter and source for publicilty. His blog is one of the most read on the net and gives a great sneak peak into the future of the web. That’s why we love TechCrunch.

YGG Podcast episode 4

It’s about damn time we did another episode. But it is again a lonely episode with Travis sitting in a soundbooth all by himself. Anyone obsessed with his voice will enjoy it, everyone else…too bad!

Those naked pics of men, yeah, they tie into the show. Really!

This episode talks about how YGG can improve with a few tweaks, the importance of streakers, and a new business opportunity for you. (Now you have to listen to the show to hear that idea ;)

So put on your birthday suit, sit back, relax, and you’ll fit right into episode 4 of the YGG Podcast.

Hope you enjoy it!

PostSecret

Whether you enjoy laughing, crying, or thinking, PostSecret has all those bases covered. People around the World send in postcards revealing a secret they’ve held onto. PostSecret is a powerful site that carries the emotions of many through visual executions on postcards. We love PostSecret for being our shoulder to laugh, cry, and contemplate on.
