Advertising & Marketing: Podcast Your Way to Ireland

I just completed my regular blog reading adventure and came across this post on the Irish Eyes blog discussing a promotion being held by Tourism Ireland.
It seems the good folk over there have dscovered podcasting and want to send a bunch of Americans over there for a week to do some podcasts about Ireland. Those selected will recive " a one-week tour to the Island of Ireland for two this fall – including round-trip airfare, accommodations, ground transportation, a sleek MP3 player and logistical support in Ireland to produce your own podcast."
Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, so go on all you headover to shamrock.org/podcast/. Entries close 31st of August so get cracking.
Will be interesting to know if they get many new bookings from the promotion. It's a clever idea but I dont know if they will get the results. They arent specifically seeking anyone with podcasting experience and state that the tourism website will host the podcasts. I belive they would be better off sending existing podcasters/bloggers with large band of followers. I had a quick Google and it seems there are quite a few travel podcasts out there - surelly you would be better off giving them the gig and maybe even some cash as an incentive. It would even seem less biased and more independent coming from an external source. Even creating something like tuscany.podtravels.tv to me seems a more viable alternative.
What are your thoughts and are you going to enter?

LOL a typical american view of Ireland:
"It seems the good folk over there have discovered podcasting"
We discovered it while searching the interwebnet (or is that what it's called).OJK

LOL - I don't know anything about Ireland, so I have no comment.

Right i'll explain - When Americans come over to Ireland they marvel at how we have mobile phones and cars etc. I'm not exagerating either.
My grand-uncle came back over from America after about 20 years living their. One of the first things he told us about was this thing called an mp3 player. LOL
He was shocked that we had iPods over here.

I've never really traveled outside of the US other than Mexico and Canada - so again, no opinion :)

Dont worry fattony I would rather be called an American than a New Zealander.
Thats nothing fattony, some Americans come down to Australia and they are dissapointed because we dont ride kangaroos to work, were not all like Steve Erwin, not every girl is a 6"1' blonde with big breasts & a never ending tan and some Aussies do not say "Gday" and call you a "mate"(although I do). I was even talking to a tourist from California a few weeks ago in a hotel reasturant and they were shocked to see a snow report on the local news. "Snow, in Australia, really? It's some kind of practical joke right?" While we have nothing on Whistler we do have snow every year with a solid ski industry.
And of course the English get annoyed because none of us drink Fosters (I wouldnt even give it to my dog) and only 12 year old girls watch Neighbours (it's an Aussie soapie).

Ireland has an interwebnet?!??! wow :D
So true Bill, I think the Yanks think we all drink Fosters too... it's actually VB, Tooheys (my favourite) or XXXX (if queenslander)
And I can't ever remember throwing a "shrimp on the barbie" :D
The campus I've been living on here is about 50% US students, and what's weird (plus a little annoying) is they actually do fit the stereotypical "like you know, whatever" speech! "Like" comes up at least twice in every sentence lol
Anyways, that's enough... I shall refrain from New Zealander jokes :)
Yeah I doubt they will receive much in return for the expenses of taking Americans over there.

Ha ha ha, so we're not the only ones. Sheesh i thought they only did it to the Irish.

We only know what they show us on TV and what they tell us at Outback Steakhouse :)

Do yee not have one? I'd be lost without the World Wide Interwebnet. I thank the Americans fro giving it 2 us, we are eternally grateful, lol
We hook up to it on our 56k modems - whats broadband? :) -

Quite true. We get that many American tv shows, movies, documentaries, music, reasturants etc. here so we form a "balanced opinion".
Allso I've had a number of friends live over there, I was even friends with an American girl for a year, she was fresh off the plane. Poor girl I think I sent her straight back (j/k). I plan to visit the states in the not to distant future, although I think Europe is first no the agenda (New Zealand dosent count - visiting early next year).
It's interesting the preconceptions we form about other countries we have never visited.
-
As much as you think we stereotype others, I'd be willing to bet my bottom dollar there are many more innaccurate stereotypes about American than any other country.
All this text being gray is annoying. Gotta fix that somehow...
-
You might just be right Eric. I know many of my fellow Aussies have a lot of pre-concived ideas about Americans.
Perfect example, I was out on the town with friends a few months back and we ended up chatting to two girls from Austin, Texas who were backpacking around Australia. The majority of my mates were shocked to learn that both girls hated George W. One friend actually asked the girls if they were speaking with there "normal (tone of) voice", they were expecting a "deep southern drawl".
I've certinally been making a concious effort for a few years now to limit and stop creating pre-concived ideas and stereostypes. I missed out on what would have been a MAJOR opportunity in my life about 2 years ago because I had those limiting belifs of the people offering me what was an incredible opportunity.
