Advertising & Marketing: To call or not to call: A discussion about cold calling

Hey guys,
I was recently given the oppurtunity to work hand in hand with a financial planner looking to drum up new business. He expects most of the new business to be acquired through cold calling but is open to other forms of marketing.There is so much discussion on cold calling being good or bad. What are your opinions?
Also, any suggestions as to how I could drum up business for him other than cold calling or any cold calling tips if you're in favour?

Not a big fan. I would rather go to a chamber of commerece event, or a trade show and meet people in person. Then you are both out to do the same thing at the same time. cold calling can catch people off gaurd and then the person on the other end gets defensive and doesn't wanna hear your pitch.

One of my family members is a salesman who is forced to hit a quota of cold calls per week. He has to use the same approach/speech every time to monitor his success rate. I can't remember what he said his rate was at for interest from the persons called, but I do remember that it was way below his boss' ideal quota.
Take a listen to one of Seth Godin's speeches where he talks about building relationships with clients before you ask them to marry you. It might help you out.

Thanks for all the replies. Ok so 'permission marketing' is the concept I got from the mp3. I think Seth Godin's strategies are very practical and can easily be practised when selling products (especially via the internet). The same can't be said about service oriented businesses that rely very little on an online presence.
I'm sure there are better ways of marketing than cold calling but I can't help but think it *is* indeed valuable, especially in some industries moreso than others.
There has to be a happy medium between permission marketing and cold calling though. I need help getting there....
