Ive been brainstorming ideas on how to advertise websites, and was trying to think down the business card route when this idea came to me.

Get a personalised stamper and an inkpad with the domain name and a short message and stamp it on bills ($). It would be like a long term business card that keeps getting pased along to different people.

I know if i saw a domain name on a $ bill i had been give I would be curious enough to check it out.

The only stumbling block is that its illegal to deface money. Would this be classed as defacing? and if it is it would be very tough to pin it on me because even though its my domain i could say someone tried to set me up as revenge.

    What do you think?

I personally think its great, but I realise I would need to be wary of the law.

    Thats an amazing idea!
the only thing is that they can probably fine you, even though "your friend" defaced the money.

But still, thats amazing! Ill try it with some competition on mine... ill tell you if they get fined.

The only downfall, from an advertiser's point of view, is that the hits I'll slowly receive over a long period of time, are random. The chances of the persons holding my ad bill, being part of my target market, let alone interested in my offerings are slim to nill.

From a media experiment direction, a la million dollar homepage, it might have a bit of traction.

When it comes to legalities I'll share a little Paul Arden story with you from his book, Whatever You Think Think The Opposite:

When a client asked how much it would cost to get permission to photograph the Eiffel Tower for use in an advertisement, the bureaucrats representing the city of Paris said 10,000 Pounds.

The client didn't think that was such a good idea any more.

    So they didn't use it.

I wanted it for this book, but I don't think 10,000 Pounds is such a good idea either.

    So I didn't ask.

(a picture of the Eiffel Tower sits to the right of this story in the book)

People are already doing this for entertainment purposes - it's not illegal. Please see:

    FAQ #8

You're ok as long as you can re-issue the money (ie. someone will still accept it).

    $100 - 9 years

I am not sure what you meant above. Are you asking whether writing stuff on the bill would violate this section of the law? I think the key to look at is:
or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft, note, ... with intent to render such item(s) unfit to be reissued ...
What you're trying to do is keep them in the system, not take them out (otherwise who would see your advertising?)

Maybe your creativity could be redirected.....your business card coud "resemble" a dollar bill or better yet....a hundred dolllar bill. Creatively add you info on the "bill". Make your info stand out with highlight yellow!

People don't hang on to money...once they view you, will they remember you? If they look for you, where will that dollar be?

FOCUS! Find a way to get the word out to your targeted audience! Who are they? Where are they?

My best business card idea was for my photography. I had a base design on my cards. I had about 24 different photos for the "photo area". I printed up a variety of cards. I would show about 6 cards or so (mini portfolio) and let the reciever choose the card. They picked the card with the photo they liked and would hang on to it longer!

You can order 1 million dollar bills and have your website and/or contact info added on the bill.

They are awesome... just hand them out ... people will keep them because they are a million dollar bill.

They are expecially fun to give to a waitress along with her tip.
