I've been following Microsoft's progress very closely lately and it seems like they're really getting their act together. They have made some positive acquisitions and huge steps towards taking a piece of the online advertising pie. What are your thoughts so far? Do you think Yahoo and MSN have a snowballs chance in hell at succeeding in the overthrowing of Google?

    in a word... NO

if you ask anyone to name a search engine they will say google. Its like tippex, sellotape and hoover.

i think it will be very tough to catch up with, however I must say that gmail sucks.

Funny, I actually like gmail for its search capabilities and tagging, although I wish they'd have a better contact system (importing is useless).

I am really getting sick of how bad Google's search results are, mostly because of the onslaught of SEO specifically directed at them. It may take awhile, but people will migrate if the top few links continue to be advertising nonsense.

I think Google is one of the worst search engines as far as relevant results come in. Sure you can find your answers, but not like you used to. I much prefer Yahoo or MSN right now.

I think they've got a shot at it...in fact I hope they can get it together enough to get a piece of the pie.

What a lot of people forget about is where google was 5 or 6 years ago. They were nothing. Yahoo led the search market and nobody had ever heard of Google. And out of nowhere Google made life easier and simpler, something that most search engines didn't do, and they began to claim their stake in the search world.

What Google did will be done again by someone else in a few years. When a search engine realizies that you can't beat Google by out Googling them, and offers a radical new platform that we've never seen before, like Google did with AdSense, they'll take off.

Search engines are very unstable objects when it comes to brand loyalty. As much as Google has built a faithful flock of followers, those people can easily jump ship if Google messes up in anyway, and people require change to disrupt the repetitiveness of life.
