We have had a recent rash of spam registrations that are done for the sole purpose of SEO by having a link in the profile. I've installed a patch today that records the IP address of all newly registered users and will allow us to ban their IP or IP ranges from viewing any content on the site whatsoever in order to stop this. Just thought I'd let everyone know :)

Sounds like a good step in the right direction! What patch did you install? I have a message board for a website I launched in Feb. (www.literatureforall.com) and even though there are no more than 3 threads there, I seem to be getting about 2-3 spam posts a day, just as if they were comments on a blog.

Can you get a CAPTCHA on the signup to also try to stem the flow of spammers?

Looks like it's an image verification add-on.

I think our best bet for the new YGG would be to send people who register, a verification e-mail to confirm who they are. Most of the spammers I've blocked or kicked out have used what look like fake e-mail addresses.

We do send a verification email. You're not allowed to post anything until you verify the email address, however; you still show up as a new member.

Ahhhhhh, that's the problem. Let me see if anyone has created a patch for that.

One option is eliminating the "website" form field from the registration page. People can still add it after they've registered in their "edit profile" section. It messes up the bots that are trying to register simply for SEO with their URL. A better description and the mod are here:

    And here's another way:

See if either of those might work at telling these bots to piss-off.
