Great idea, but, I'm sorry, the design is terrible. My eyes are full of bleeding. Might I recommend hiring a designer to make your site a little more eye-pleasing?

It is a good idea, but unfortunately I have to agree the design leaves something to be desired.

Specifically? Well your landing page burns my retinas. Okay, so that's not helpful.

I run 1024x768 on my work computer, which I feel is pretty standard across the board for many users. The map of the US is bigger than my screen -- a no-no.

The background is ... bad. A bunch of random images thrown together doesn't screen 'business' to me.

Remember, you are targeting people who want to come off as professionals. I would tone it down, make it more clean and crisp so that it comes off professional.

Hope that helps. I'm not a designer, just an average guy.

    Hey lawrence-lugar,

I agree on the idea being good and the execution being poor.

shoot me an e-mail (admin at 1lotus dot com) and lets discuss how I can help solve that problem for you.

@heressexpistols - if you are worth your salt, you wouldn't comment behind an anonymous profile. in my opinion

As for the rest, lol - regarding the 'crazy' layout...the concept was made to not be your traditional, square, black/white business directory...in case you haven't picked that up.
I'd assume the 'arrogant' name, would already explain the theme.

anyways, email me - if you have something to say.
    i'm hiring too, equity-based.

Wow...No one was bashing you, just offering some criticism. We're all here just trying to help each other and "lol"ing at those who took time to offer their suggestions is just bad business.

And I can't help but notice that you're the only one that called the layout "crazy" - everyone else just said it hurt their eyes.

This might not be the place for you, my friend.

I think everyone here is right, it is a good idea but the design is just too much. Could be a great site if you just took some pointers....

That truly made me "LOL". :)

In all seriousness, you're getting responses from your primary audience. Business people who would use your service. You didn't specifically ask for criticism at first, but you did ask for it to be elaborated on. As Eric mentioned, we're just trying to help. No one is going to force you to take the advice, but being a jackass isn't going to make friends either.

Worth my salt? I wasn't aware that I needed to use my real name in order to offer an opinion—one that's been echoed by every other poster in this thread, if I'm not mistaken.

If the fact that I'm posting in relative anonymity distresses you, by all means disregard my input. You might consider listening to the other half a dozen people who are saying the same thing and using their real names.

i've thoroughly thought this site out.

if i lighten up the graphics...then i'll have to 'lighten up' the "theme"...so much so, that eventually the site won't match the arrogant domain name. before you know it - everything becomes diluted... if i make the site more 'acceptable'

don't take me so literal - you guys get insulted so easily...be coool, baby. and YGG is suppose to be a site for young entrepreneurs...i'd have thought i wouldn't encounter so many squares.

    just for comparison:
i have accountants, lawyers, financial analysts business cards on the site...Of all People, you'd think they wouldn't "get it"...that they'd be the toughest sell of all...but they're the easy sell, not the 'younger' crowd - go figure

    'squares'? 'be cool, baby?'

You know, I heard that it ain't cool being a jive turkey... so close to Thanksgiving.

Gosh, this isn't so swell. I'm gonna go and hang out at the malt shop after the moving picture show.

I just have to add....I think you're really overstating the "arrogance" of your domain name. It doesn't sound arrogant at all. There isn't anything arrogant about the site, either. The last time I saw a brick wall (one of the many changing backgrounds on your site) and thought to myself "wow...that's sure an arrogant object" was...never. Also, your political campaign-like button logo screams "I want your vote!" more than "check out my arrogance".

The word arrogant just sounds bad, anyways - so all these things I'm saying are actually a positive masquerading as a negative. Oh yes, I went there.

And besides all the design tragedy's instantly apparent, if someone sticks around long enough to click on their city they'll only be disillusioned by the inability to search or sort in any way. In fact, nearly all of the business cards in the Spokane, WA area are at least a 4-hour drive. How is that effective? The tagline should actually read "Eat your cake, yellow pages".

You have a great day, Lawrence Lugar!

wow, what a discussion. I think there is this weird suggestion that for some reason, good design cannot provide you with an "arrogant" type theme.

Professional design is about providing a clear and straight forward visual message to your viewers. Clean design does not have to be blue collar, boring, it can be edgy, rebellious...etc. And white space can be your friend!!
