I'm looking for a script that'll allow me to display a message until the reader clicks hide or remove. If and when they do, a cookie is stored and they'll never see it again.

Digg does this on their latest homepage:

"Check out New Digg Profiles -- connect with friends and share your favorite stories --------------------------- Remove"

many others use something like it, but I've haven't been able to find such a script. Has anyone?

Dude I have been looking for the same thing. I think most of them are calling it Ajax Status, or something like that.
But I cannot figure out how they are doing it. I love that look and feel though.

There are a couple Wordpress plugins that enable you to display a greeting to new visitors for a set amount of time:

    http://www.3wdl.co.uk/2007/06/10/greeting-your-first-time-visitors-and-encouraging-them-to-subscribe/

But they don't have the option of hiding it and rely on cookies, whereas Digg ties your show/hide selection into your Account's preferences. So if they clear their cookies on a regular basis, that message will pop up again.
