Internet & Tech: That phone.

This has to be the last remaining forum without an iPhone post so let me oblige.
Who's getting it? Why/why not?
I'm not, because they don't sell them in Australia yet. I probably would get one though, because unlimited data (actually useful amounts of data at all) is unheard of here and that would be sweet.

I lust for one, however I'm locked into a Verizon contract. One and a half more years and I'm going to be the proud owner of an iPhone.
It's a blessing in a not so great disguise though. 8GB just won't cut it. I want my iPhone to REPLACE my iPod so I don't have to carry around 2 devices, and my 30GB iPod is filled to the brim so the current gen iPhone is virtually worthless to me at this point. Hopefully they'll get that figured out in the next 18 months.

My contract expires in Jan08 but I doubt they will have the things here that early in the year.
They pushed the phone as an ipod replacement in the first keynote, I wonder how many people that applies to? I have a 20gb 3G ipod but with 25GB of music it overflows, but I also bought a shuffle for more regular use with podcasts. For me having the full 25GB would be nice, but I could easily live with 5gb of music and a few smart playlists configured.
There's an interesting post somewhere that says when people question the iphone most of the time the answer is just 'not yet' rather than no. Battery life got an upgrade before the thing was even released, and it sounds like the data network was upgraded recently too. It wouldn't surprise me if they rolled out regular updates to the mobile osx just like they do with computer osx - and will the hardware just scale like a pc as well? Incremental improvements vs throwing the phone out for a new one?

iPhone is a piece of fucking shit and you're a toolbox if you buy one. You want me to pay how much to ATT for 450 minutes a month? FUCK YOU STEVE 'HAND' JOBS!

Believe it or not, that was the original purpose of The Drunken Epic. It was going to be a blog where my buddy and I would only post if we were absolutely trashed.

The iPhone probably won't be available in Canada for a few months, no word has been made of Rogers' negotiation progression.
Nonetheless, I'm holding out for the second version. There are a lot of things that I'm not too impressed by and think it'll take a serious firmware and hardware upgrade to officially sell me. (only 2mp camera, no bluetooth support outside of headset, can't record video, locked to AT&T;/Rogers, etc...)
The iPhone will change the standards of the mobile industry, which is fantastic.
But if you look back at the history of the iPod, 1st gen through 5th, it was worth holding out until the 3rd or 4th version.
The feedback they'll gather over the next year (already thousands and thousands of suggestions) will mold the unit. I can see us being able to get a 20gb model with an available api (not just browser based) in the next 18 months.

Apperently there will a firmware upgrade for the iPhone through apple just before Leopard launches. It will address most of the problems that people are reporting.
A little birdie told me so....

I had about 15 little birdies in my RSS telling me that too :)

Let me just say I'm never paying $500-600 for a phone unless it provides me some sort of sexual gratification. And I thought my $200 [before rebate] VX8600 was expensive.
I'd rather have a Crackberry.

HAHA well said Kevin, although I am in the market for a blackberry, unlike you apparently.

Do you have an iPod Kevin?

I've got an old iPod mini.

wish we didn't have to wait months longer to get it in the UK... I'm itching for one. needed a pda for years but can't bare to have anything Microsoft!

Combine an iPod with a $200 cell phone and the price is right on and we haven't even begun to talk about how much better the iPhone is than a regular video iPod ($300) and a "meh" cell phone ($200). I have no gripes there. It's not for everyone, but they're certainly not off their rocker.
Proud founder of YGG -
It's certainly a version 1 product but it's not bad for a company's first ever phone right? Give them a break!
I think I'm happy it's not out yet here otherwise I'd be a poorer man, but I don't think I'll be able to resist in a year or so when it's polished up and integrated with Leopard.

I'm interested to see if they hold off on debuting a full-screen iPod with touch-screen and coverflow this year, to keep the focus on the iPhone.
Proud Partner of YGG -
Since Leopard was delayed, and the phone was released as late as possible in the month I think they will be working their arses off trying to polish Leopard and the phone as they are now.
That said, I'm SURE there will be a shiny new toy of some sort released ready for Christmas :)

haha way to catch on guys. Glad Kevin was able to lay it out for you 2.
BTW, I got to finger f**k one today while at the dentist, pretty nice. Very clear and bright display. Didn't play with all the functions but it did seem pretty sweet...not exactly $600 plus locked into AT&T; sweet, but pretty sweet non the less.

Looks pretty nice. But I am and always will be a big fan of my Blackberry!

In time... in time...
I think it's safe to assume that most people want one, even hardcore MS fans (do they still exist?!)

Talk about old school. I think I still have mine somewhere as well.

I think the iPhone is interesting, but I'll wait for version 3 or 4 and when it's on Verizon before I buy it. Truth be told, I want a Google phone more than anything else. I want to be able to sync with Gmail and GCal, use Google Talk, Reader, etc...
