Off-Topic: Step outside of the North American box

In the next couple months I'll be getting a break from work and want to drop everything I'm doing and travel. Being in a creative industry, I think the trip would greatly expand my artistic abilities and help me see the world from a different perspective.
It was recommended to me that I "just have to" travel europe. Oh, and let me add, I've never stepped out of the boundaries of North America and have lived a very constrained lifestyle for many years. So I'm trying to break outta the box.
This is where I ask all you young-go-getters, where should I go? I'm open to just about anything; want to spend 1 to 2 weeks travelling, and have anywhere between $1,000 and $3,000 for the trip. I was looking at www.gapadventures.com, which looks very exciting and adventurous. I'd appreciate all your travelling stories, advice and must sees. Thanks.

Go to Europe - its a blast - go to Eastern Europe if you want to have some cheap fun with an experience of a lifetime. Dont miss Auscwitz and Prauge if you go to eastern Europe. Oh yes, - and dont forget to drink absinth when over in Prauge -- you know, experience the culture ;).... and maybe because it is illegal in the US :)
Ummm - i would recommend not going with a "trip group" -- to touristy and you dont experience the real culture. Ask locals what to do, where to go etc. Th most fun i ever had when ive been over to Europe is when you hang out with the locals, etc.
Just have fun - stay in hostels for cheap..around 10-20 USD a night if you want to meet lots of new people - you will meet so many cool people from other countries. If you like to drink, drink with ozzys or Kiwis -- they love there booz and are fun people to hang out with.
Have fun and stay out of trouble :)

Go to Europe or Australia!
I agree with Joey, stay where you can that is affordable, have fun and make this a trip of a lifetime.
And take lots of pictures!

Okay Karen and Joey. Thanks for your advice. The person that originally recommended I go to Europe said to fly to Germany, then just travel on the trains to France and England. I'll do my planning with a backpack and a camera and try and get as many sights to see in the venture.

If you choose Europe, its a good decision. Alot of their metro systems are way more advanced (and cheaper) then the TTC, you should be fine.
I suggest you stay in a hostel as well. I haven't because I have fam up there but even people who come to TO and stay in hostels have had nothing but great things to say about them.
I'm going to be in Italy and France late October and I can't wait!!!!

The trains are the way to go in Europe - fun relaxing, and you can see all the country side. Its amazing how different each train is though. From Frankfurt (germany) to Vienna (austria) ... (on a side note - venice is buetiiful and worth the visit) --- I took the ICE over and it is a new train...where from Venice to Krakow (poland) i took an overnight sleeper train that looks like it was something from WW2. Same ticket, etc.... i had a Eurorail Pass - shows how rich to poor each country is and the difference between west and east europe.
Backpacking is the way to go i would say also. Ive always flied into Germany because my bro lives there, so i guess i could say i recommend flying in there to0 :)
And my last word of advice - if you are in Germany and have a way or a chance to drive down the Autobahn -- DO IT -- i had my brothers BMW going about 125 and was still being passsed every once in awhile. Lots and Lots of fun :)
I also have another chance to go over this fall with my mom, but business is picking up and she wanst to be over there a good couple weeks so i really dont know if i will go. My brother has a 4 bedroom house over there so i can stay in Germany for free making the trip a lot cheaper.
Just have fun, do what you enjoy and take lots of pictures :)
Again - Eric... if you would let us attach pics i would attach a few pics from last time i was over in Europe (last march) ;)
