As I am launching 2 new websites of my own and a few for some clients in the next 2 months i am just wondering what marketing techniques do you guys use.

What is your best way to get your website noticed?
Do you use any submissions tools to various search engines or gallery type websites?
    Do you publish articles?

Also, whats your best and most effect way of advertising?
    Paid Advertising? if so who?
Do you do many link exchanges, if so how do you pick your websites?

I'm sure you guys can suggest many other questions to ask yourselves...

Don't bother submitting to search engines. Google is 85% of Australia, Yahoo and MSN the rest. Submitting doesn't guarantee anything. My portfolio page is PR5, if I put a link on there the site will be indexed within days :) So just get good links to get found and indexed.

There is a cool gallery and text bookmark submission tool somewhere, forgotten the URL. Could be handy depending on your site.

Adwords is good for instant traffic :)

I guess the main thing is to get targetted traffic. No point getting the nerds on Digg to visit your site if you are selling retirement homes eh? You know who your target market is, marketing is just getting your focussed message in front of those people.. Got an exclusive YGG sneak peek at these new domains? Then I could maybe say something relevant :P

    TechCrunch!!!

Seriously? I don't know. The verdict is still out.

Sure AdWords and all that SEO type stuff is great if you're going after foot traffic for the purposes of generating per-click $$. But if you're looking for sustainability, I'd say targeted marketing is the best way to go.

Here's the crazy thing - MySpace was started by three former college roommates. MySpace Greg (co-founder) was an alumni of my college. And I remember in college coming out to my car in the parking garage after class and having these little stupid flyers on my car advertising live music events by artists featured on some dumb website called MySpace.

Folks knock Guerrilla marketing techniques but there's a reason why they are the most useful.

The question you need to figure out is what do you want your marketing to do for you - are you trying to build brand awareness (if that's the case, leave SEO alone)? Are you trying to build repetitious "foot" traffic? Or are you simply trying to increase your per-click (and click through) $$$?

FIgure that out and then work backwards.

    Ms Nadi,

I think you are confused about SEO is becaus SEO marketing isn't just about increasing click through traffic to generate cpc $.

I use it extensively in my offline business and it makes all of my money. I think SEO is a great marketing technique that is something you have to build for your long term marketing plan.

Agreed. SEO isn't just about click-through potential - actually it has little to do with click-through potential and more to driving traffic the old fashioned way (based on content).

However - I think a lot of it has to do with what the purpose of a marketing strategy is. While SEO is great and yields great results for some, it may not be the wisest $$$ investment.

SOme of the most successful websites have gotten to where they are based on word of mouth alone. Others have relied heavily on guerrilla marketing schemes (for lack of a better word). While others have tapped into CPC potentials through capitalization. And yet others have gone the SEO route.

    It all depends.

But I think key to any marketing strategy is figuring out the end result and then driving strategies that will yield these results rather than crafting marketing around a potential avenue of increasing traffic.
