I'm graduating from UCI in June 07. Got a job at a Bank in downtown LA as a Jr. Financial Analyst. Although pay is average for an entry-level undergraduate, I do not particularly fancy the whole corporate/salary lifestyle. My dad has been willing to support my business endeavors and has agreed to help finance my ideas. After a year or two of working I'm planning to open up my own business. Been really thinking of what kinds of businesses I could open. Do any of you guys have businesses of your own? Any ideas of start ups? Would love to know!!!

    Willseo,

What do you enjoy doing? I would recommend starting there, it's very difficult to ask someone (any ideas for start-up) when each of our passions vary.

I too spent many months trying to figure out what type of business to open, asking certain individuals, why they chose that field and "how did you become so rich" I also, tried replicating their business (bad idea).

My last venture was a failure due to lack of passion.

So in conclusion (((Find your Passion)))

Asking someone what you should do with your life is most likely why you're sitting in the corporate world right now. You were undoubtedly led there by parents, peers, or educators.

Don't make the same mistake again. Don't worry about money. Find your passion and go with it, the rest will follow.

    There's two sides to it.

For the most part, Corporate America, in my opinion, sucks. But there is a LOT you can learn from it. And there are also multiple views of corporate america. Folks tend to forget that Google, Yahoo!, Apple are all a part of "corporate america". Sure the companies' founder do not fit the bill of your run-of-the-mill-tight-wad-in-a-suit powerbroker that comes to mind, but there actions fall right in line.

I say do what feels right. NO path is permanent. If you feel you have what you need to move forward with your business ventures, jump ship and go for it. Corporate America will always be there waiting in the wings and your college degree will never go out of style.

Or take the big-bank job, learn and work during the day and work that startup in the evening.

No path is permanent. Worse comes to worst - take that job, it sucks, you quit and you go after something else. Lucky for you, you have options. Exercise them all.

You've signed a contract for a year? Wait what? Your offer of employment was conditional based on the fact that you would stay at least for year?? And if you don't then what!??!

Case in point: reason # 2.19495.01 why Corporate America sucks, but why there's a lot to be learned from it.

If I decide to leave, I guess they cannot do anything about it. I just rescind my contract and don't get paid anymore haha.
