Just curious guys. Do you have no follow commands on your blog and forum?

I haven't seen any of my links show up in my link: search results.

Don't get me wrong I love YGG and this is not an anit YGG statement but I think it would be great if the visitors were rewarded for their participation and contributions to the site by getting link backs.

Check out this project about how no follows are actually counter productive and don't stop spam.

Just installed an extension that enabled me to disable nofollow for members of all rank.

Going by the documentation, all links in posts are indexable and can be crawled by search engines now.

I upped the blog settings to leave the follows for 365 days.

The forum sigs should have the no follow tags removed as well.

Still why should should all of your past work all of the sudden not be valid. The content is still archived and valid. That just doesn't seem right.

If anything it's discouraging from staying active because you know that in a year everything you've done will be gone.

Anyway it's up to you guys but that seems counter productive and should reward your members regardless. I'm active here because I enjoy being here but it would be nice to also know that I'm getting something back and it won't be gone in 365 days.

BTW - the majority of forums/blogs disable this because on MOST forums/blogs it promotes a shit load of SPAM. People post quantity, not quality, and they have obnoxious signatures to accompany the posts littered with links.

Spam is not a problem here because you have logins, askimet WP plug ins that filter out the spam. Spam is a not a problem here.

And maybe I didn't go to sleep until 4 am last night and I've still got to do my taxes today. Death, taxes, and no follow.

I still think 365 is lame. You might as well not do it at all because it's just going to go away. Reward your true members that contribute to your content and help you get more members by providing stong participation by giving us a measly yes follow.

I don't see what the issue is here. 365 is cool with me. Make a post today. Then make a post 366 days from now so it stays up to date.

Not that I would suggest doing it... but...

I would set it to infinity but there doesn't seem to be a checkbox for that.

In a year's time, if this site happens to be anything like it is now (which it won't), we'll up the ante.

It's the principal of the matter. What good reason is there to take it away? It's like taking away an affiliate commission after 365 days. You worked and contributed and got some people to sign up for their product by contributing to your blog. Then because 365 days came around they say that now you no longer get credit for your work.

Does your work no longer count? It's this simple. YGG is a social website. We make an effort to improve that social factor and why not show a little love to the users for the efforts?

I'm not attacking you guys there just isn't any good logical reason why users shouldn't get back links. The whole spam argument doesn't work anymore. If you technically can't do then I understand but otherwise it seems unreasonable.

This is actually kinda funny Aaron - it's not like your rank is going to increase because you have 1 trillion links in a forum pointing to your site. It's only going to make so much of a difference before it starts to ignore them, or possibly have a negative effect. Search engines are no longer stupid and if they see a ton of unrelated IBL's, it might throw up a red flag.

We are giving users back links now, which is more than most community sites like this do. We even have the directory which any member can have a permanent back link which is FOREVER - is that not showing love?

There already is incentive to stay active, and that's the fact that YGG's pages all get indexed and if you post quality info with a link in your signature, you might pick up a customer or two.

Make a post once a year and stop breaking our balls over something that really has little bearing on your SEO anyways.

Having a hundred links from one domain shouldn't really count any more than having 50 links on one domain. So I doubt it matters at all in that respect, but hey SEO isn't an exact science.

That said, 365 days seems kinda odd. I've always thought that a link to a site is passing on a vote of confidence in it, and you use nofollow if you don't want to be associated with them and therefore pass on your vote. To me it is an all or nothing kinda thing, not a yeah I trust you today but in a year? No way mate!

I'm not saying it is about who trusts who here.. I'm just wondering what the reasoning is behind a plugin that adds nofollow tags after a certain time period (here or anywhere..)?

yeah, to me it does seem strange, I have never heard of the nofollow with time restrictions on it.
Does anyone know where else it is used? or is it just something useless?

We didn't make the plugin, if someone wants to invest the time into re-doing it w/out the time restriction, you're more than welcome to contribute that.

I agree with you guys that YGG is first and foremost about the community, helping each other out and having a good time. However, benefiting from your contributions is a nice bonus for all of our work. Even if it doesn't boost your SEO through the roof it still helps. I personally see it as a little thank you for my participation.

Eric if you place the days to 0 it will make the links count indefinitely.

It's not that we enabled a plugin that adds nofollow tags. Vanilla, Wordpress, and just about every other community app does it automatically by default and doesn't allow you to modify that through an admin.

What we did was add a plugin that changes those nofollow tags to follow, thanks to the original link from Aaron.

I set the limit on the plugin for a year because I can guarantee you, this site won't be what it is today and most likely won't be using the same platform. I'm not saying this content won't get migrated, just that we'll worry about the SEO turning itself off a year from now.
