Ideas & Concepts: How do you consolidate an idea?

Is there some sort of process to take what you have for an idea and consolidate it to its fundamentals?
I'm having a really hard time with this. The idea is completely disorganized and complex. Thus I want to gather and rip it down to the fundamentals.
It's like a puzzle trying to fit all the pieces together. I'm like completely stuck, no words to express my frustration!
Have any ideas to help? Do you have a way of doing it?

If you had to pick 1 feature or function what would it be.
Once you determine the core idea then you can start develop the others around it. Until then it's just a mess of different ideas that have no rhyme.
If a gun was to your head what would you choose as the main service, function, or use of the idea. Then next step choose it's main body parts.
I guess put it together like a human body. What will be the body where all of the extremities converge. Then choose the extremities. Don't get carried away with to many extras though.

I'm doing something similar right now. I have probably 20 pages of 'cool ideas' that I could do with this potential site, but nothing started.
I ask myself, "what is the most useful bit of it all?"
Then "what is the least I can launch with?" (Be serious and tough on this one, don't talk yourself into more features :P )
Then make it :)
Once you have something up and running it will be pretty clear what needs adding next. The 20 pages of "it'd be nice if"s are simply put in a TODO list and you go through them in order of importance. I'll probably get one page into it and throw the rest out though.
This approach works well for web-based stuff. Starting a blog? All you need it a default wordpress installation, edit the 'about' page and write your first post. Should take an hour at most. For me it is a web-app, I only really need one table to get started, so that's it.

Thanks Aaron and Ross. My main problem is those extras, those unnecessities. Trying to dig through it all. I'll definitely try out what you guys said.

Aaron, Travis and myself are working through a project right now that's required a lot of thought to lay it all out. I'll tell you what, three heads are better than two. Bounce your ideas off of some friends and colleagues, they'll help you weed out some of the clutter.
