Okay, I need some geek advice.

I’m getting ready to by a laptop (finally) what do you recommend MAC OR WINDOWS.
Since, I was a kid, I have only use windows, so I’m not much of MAC user; however I have used my friend’s Mac Book Pro a few times and I really liked the platform.

I’m just not over excited about paying double for a laptop that doesn’t have as much processor or ram speed as some of the TOSHIBA and HP’s

    Looking for any input?

    Thanks.

Entirely depends on what you plan to use it for. What apps, tasks, and features do you need?

What are you going to be using it for? I have a regular MacBook (not a pro) and upgraded with non-OEM ram (2GB) and it hauls balls. It's just a core duo, not a core 2 duo so the one you would buy would be even faster. I never have any issues and I use it for everything - office docs, photoshop, web dev., EVERYTHING. It's not a gaming machine although it does just fine playing Age of Empires II from time to time.

Get a Mac Jason - honestly. You'll love it. I used windows for 13 years but I haven't looked back once since I switched and I HATE using the PC at my office. You'll actually be excited about your computer again. Every time I open it, even though it's been a while since I got it - I still get that little kid, brand spanking new toy feeling.

If you get one I'd be happy to help you make the switch, as would anyone else here who went to Mac I'm sure.

Here's a tip: Buy refurbished on Apple.com to save some dough. They're just as good as new and come with a warranty as if it were new.

Here's another tip: Buy AppleCare. For the reg. MacBook it's $249 and really gives you peace of mind, it's worth every penny.

    Apple Refurbished

Black MacBook with new core 2 duo processor, 120GB HD and 1GB RAM for $1,299, free shipping. The 13" screen may seem small in the store but it's actually a perfect size - even when I'm doing graphics I'm not annoyed with it.

When you're talking about the cost, also remember that when you sell your Mac, you actually get money back - unlike Windows laptops which drop in value dramatically.

As Eric and Travis said, depends on the application.

I would argue for the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad. I love mine. Solid machine.

    Eric,

Do you suggest I go with a Mac book or Mac book pro?

Would it be any cheaper to buy a mac book and up upgrade its performance?

Because I'm so happy with my MacBook, I would say it's suffice. If you got the refurbished one with 1GB of RAM you might be just fine to stay that way - but I recommend having 2GB of ram because it really makes it perform well.

They have after market RAM that's VERY affordable - it was less than $300 for 2 1GB sticks for mine and it's a quick, easy install.

A regular MacBook is going to be MUCH cheaper than a MackBook Pro, even after you upgrade to 2GB of RAM.

The macbook pro was a lot more money. Thinking back a regular macbook would have done but I like the shiny metal casing.

And the video card upgrade made it worth it.

    Get a mac.

I've got a 2.33ghz core2duo macbook pro. It flies. Mine came with 2GB of ram, but regardless of what you get make sure it has plenty of ram, osx thrives on it.

Remember that you can always delete osx and install windows natively if that's what you prefer - I have a mate who does that.

You can do pretty much anything on a mac that you would do on a pc - oh, except for Quickbooks in Australia, which is why I have a copy of Parallel's running.

    Good luck with your choice.

its really your own choice. if you want a cheaper macbook, try looking on craigslist for one. You can buy a really nice Acer Laptop for about 700(cnd).
I have just bought a new computer... and within 4 months will buy my very first...over priced.. macbook.

My first computer was an Acer desktop. It was defective in so many ways. I haven't bought any Acer products since then (1999 or so) and never will.

In my opinion, it doesnt even matter what you'll use it for, go Mac. You'll find theres a better looking and functioning application for anything you'll want to do. Only exception is if you plan on using applications developed by marketers, keyword tools, etc. Marketers usually only develop software for windows. Other than that, make the switch.

You can run any windows programs on a mac using Parallel's software, or deleting OSX and installing Windows for the whole machine.

Don't compare macs on price. Apple don't sell 2nd rate hardware, as Steve Jobs recently said, the Macbooks and iMacs on sale are all Core2Duo already. If you think they are expensive buy a second hand one which will be cheaper, but don't expect Apple to sell old stuff. (I don't know why this needs explaining, it sounds silly typing it really..)
