Picked up 2 cars today. One is a silver 2003 Audi A4 1.8T and the other is a 2004 red Audi A4 1.8T. They look freakin' sweet, especially side by side out in the front of my office.

    I'll post pics up soon.

yey! audi quattro is super :)

In my opinion it's the most advanced AWD system available. Subaru's is a close second :)

like you i like second hand cars. i don't see the point in paying steep monthly amortization. cars depreciate in value anyway.

    really good choice there.

Well one of my businesses is a small auto boutique so it's sort of my business to deal with second hand cars - but yes, I will probably never buy a car brand new...it just doesn't make sense and I'm too much of a financial geek to make that mistake.

I wish the states had more cities with developed mass transit. When I lived in France for 2 years that's all I had. I loved it. You could get so much done during your commute. Or just sleep.

The only time that is sucked was during the summer and there was no A/C. That made for some really bad smelling pits.

Also, when you've got well developed mass transit it's not just bums and people who will shank you for a hamburger that ride it. Everyone takes mass transit and it's normal. Unfortunately where I live there isn't any reliable source.

See many NSX's at those auctions?

I was looking for Twin-Turbo (JZA80, 93-98) Toyota Supras, but I had a local dealer run a search on the auction sites and apparently they are a *very* uncommon item even at the big dealer auctions.

As is most everything else I'd be looking for, sadly.

No, we never see those at auction - there's a few in Spokane but they're not that popular here. I see more Porsche's around these parts. Every now and then you'll catch a Ferrari or similar exotic in the Seattle area.

The Las Vegas Highline auction is loaded with every car you can imagine, though I never go to that - it's not very convenient.

Hmmm....I might conceivably be interested in some Porsches, I bet the margins are pretty good.

My major conundrum is that most of the stuff I'm looking for is 10+ years old, which for whatever reason apparently makes it harder to find at dealer auctions.

I had someone pull me some average auction values for early-model NSX's and they appeared to be pretty low in comparison to what I know actual private party sale prices to be.

I don't know where KBB gets their PP prices either.....No one sells 91 NSX's for $20k unless it's a salvage title or 200k++ mileage.

KBB is worthless - NADA is much more accurate and reliable. Don't even get me started on Edmunds "TMV" (true market value) - it's the biggest crock of shit I've ever seen.

Let me know of any cars you're interested in and their specs - I will setup a search notification e-mail for Manheim auctions across the country. Where are you located? I can try to find them closer to you.

Search Notification Email? O RLY? I knew not of such things, that's awesome.

I'm in the DC Metro Area, so we've got a big honkin' Adesa auction right here, along with I'm not sure what else.

    Interested in:
    -Any Nissan 240SX (1989-1998)
-JZA80 Toyota Supra (1993-1998) Twin Turbo Only
-Acura NSX (1991-1995) Newer ones are too 'spensive, lol
    -Mazda RX-7 (1993+)
-Nissan 300ZX (1990-1996) Twin Turbo Only

I would also say any Integra Type R, but I bet you can't only search for the "R" models, and searching for all Integras would cast much too wide a net.

I just want to get a sense of how often certain vehicles show up in the marketplace and at what prices. I'm trying to decide whether or not it will be worth my while to get a dealer's license.

I really only want to wholesale (as-is), as I have no desire whatsoever to maintain an actual dealership facility. I sell mostly to tuners/collectors, people who do their own work and don't really care about inspections or daily drivability.

    Hello Eric,

I have a question. Would you have any idea if $15,000 is a fair price for a 1979 mercedes benz 450sl? what about $8,000 for a 1982 mercedes 250CE? I am (trying) to collect old mercs. Just trying to get an idea how much old mercs go for there (if it's cheaper here or there). The websites I check out are mostly run by dealers. I can't seem to find a direct seller. Any idea what a dealer's typical mark-up could be?

I have no idea what those cars would go for - they're not in any of the price guides I have both online and off because they're so old. That's definitely a collectors' gig which isn't my forte. Sorry!!!

Ever done any cross-border sales Eric? I've looked into how much it would cost in tariffs and conversion expenses, but have never done it.

Hey eric, I also have done used car sales in the past. I bought used cars below market value and sold them on my own. I was thinking about getting my dealer's license and maybe doing it as a side job maybe. I am a car fanatic as well. Do you have any tips on how you started your car boutique. Would gladly appreciate the help!

I'm a licensed dealer so I have access to all the wholesale outlets/auctions. That's really the only way to go, otherwise you're praying on the public and that never feels too good.

It's not cheap, thousands a year of upkeep costs for your licenses and insurance - but it's a fun business and the auction loop is a cool fraternity of people.

We're looking to bring in some convertibles soon, probably an S2000 if we can find a nice one at auction. We've never messed with the older Acura's/Honda's but a lot of people swear by them. We really dig the German cars and usually that's what we have in stock.

We're more of a car finding and buying service though, so we don't floor a lot of inventory. Most of the sales we do are by word of mouth and by the time they're sold by the time we buy them (sweet deal huh?). The few pieces we have in stock represent outstanding opportunities we couldn't pass up that we stumble upon while sourcing custom buys for customers.
