Notice anything odd about this ad? Who can guess what it is first?

lol, i cant remember, but my old boss used to jokingly say it all the time when someone had a minor screw up. Nobody ever got fired from it, but then again nobody ever approved an ad showing happy ppl using a competitors product.

That poster would have been the result of some stock clerk / designer that handles the in-store signage.

Has anyone heard anything about or tried running Vista via BootCamp on a Mac?

Haven't got my hands on vista, but I installed XP on Boot Camp last night.

I've been using Parallel's so that I can use the aussie quickbooks and it works great, but the C&C3; demo is out and you can only play a game properly by booting windows.

I did, and the full release can't come soon enough. C&C3; rocks!

Microsoft has blocked the install of most consumer versions of Vista from being usable on Parallels.

Ouch. That's what happens when you have a designer do the design work. lol. They all use Macbooks. When you need a computer shot and have an hour left on the clock, you're shooting your own computer to meet the deadline.

I get sick of seeing headlines like this because they are so bloody common, but I still get a laugh out of them :)

Do you think it will ever change? What company would you pick to knock apple from first place?

Linux will never be mainstream. Unfortunately you need an ad budget to knock off the likes of MSFT and AAPL. Ever seen the ad budget for a piece of (free) open source software?

Of course...never say never - but you get my drift.

Firefox is knocking off IE but they are actually making money. Lots of it.

54 million dollars of AdSense revenue from a search box isn't a lot of money when compared to the competitors.

You're right though, Firefox is doing well. It's a superior technology and they've marketed it very well. There's a few key differences between Firefox and Linux in this case...

    1. Firefox is just as easy (or easier) to use as Internet explorer - *most* average consumers aren't afraid of it.

    2. Firefox takes all of your old stuff from IE and automatically transfers it into Firefox (if you want it to).

    3. Firefox is simply a tool that runs on a mainstream operating system, which is the real product the big boys have to offer. I'm sure Microsoft is annoyed at Firefox - but it's not going to kill them as it's not their main business.

Linux is none of the above. It's not easy to use for the average consumer. It's very intimidating and as far as I know it doesn't have a utility that will automatically (with a click of the mouse) import all of your old settings, including desktop wallpaper, documents, favorites, etc. etc. etc. - meaning it's a royal pain in the ass for the layperson to start using. The learning curve is enormous when compared to something like Firefox.

We don't even need to get into all the applications that WON'T run on Linux - the most important being proprietary business applications (i.e. towing companies, fitness centers, etc.) which means the majority of the computers & users in the US aren't even in the market to disrupt their daily operations.

I'm assuming Ross said Apple but meant Microsoft because Microsoft is still number one. Apple is second - except for MP3 as you said.

The main reason Linux will never go mainstream is because it's free. The whole "you get what you pay for" mentality is one of the key deciding factors in the computer world.

That's why people pay more for an Apple, and why they won't put all of their personal and business data into the hands of an open-source community like Linux.

Sorry I forgot that some people still use Windows. I was actually talking usability-wise for the masses. Linux is not usable imo, either is windows.

Mac's are the reason my aunty is using a computer at all, but there are still others out there who don't touch the things. Who is going to grab them?

Could it be Nintendo? There were stories on digg about oldies in retirement homes going nuts over the Wii because it is something that you can just pick up and use. They love the bowling from their armchairs!

I don't see Nintendo coming into this at all. Apple is far from their prime - they're just getting started IMO. They're the only ones to watch at this point.

Some people may say Google - but their idea of usability is simple-stupid-ugly. It'll never fly.

I think Apple is the main contender to to take down Microsoft but I don't they think they can be completely taken down. Companies that large don't ever die they just level off.

Google has a chance if they make their apps more user friendly like Eric said.
