I got FindRentals up and running... AdSense, Commission Junction, and a custom Google search engine (thanks Travis!).

With some of the suggestions from another thread to post up on Craiglist, I put up ads in Birmingham and Atlanta in the "Apartments/Shared" and "Vacation Rentals" section.

I leave for the funeral, and come back today to:

    Tuesday:
22 visits, 31 pageviews, a handful of clicks, and 3 searches in the custom Google (with a click): $1.52

    Wednesday (not complete info):
    3 visits, 11 pageviews, a couple of clicks: $1.67
Also may be fewer visits because it gets pushed down the page in Craiglist.

Total: $3.19 in 2 days versus $4.56 for a month or so of BabyBought alone.

I've just put up ads in San Fran, Dallas/Fort Worth, and NYC. Hoping the increase views of this market = increased views and clicks for me.

Unfortunately, no CommissionJunction love. Patience... patience.

    Final results for yesterday... fantastic!

$3.73 in earnings bringing the grand total up to $10.11. Yee-haw! :) Hey, maybe this one will actually end up paying for itself...

Thanks for all the advice... I'm still tweaking, so we'll see if I notice any dramatic changes.

To complete the Wednesday stats from above:
45 visits, 76 pageviews, and $3.73 in earnings. You can only post so often on Craigslist, and you have to vary the ad a little bit or it won't let you post. I'm probably going to setup a schedule and post in different cities on different days, until it falls off and I can post in that city again.

Hey Kevin - have you thought about buying an auto-craigslist posting utility? I think they're like $100 (unless someone knows otherwise) and it might really make it easier for you.

Ask Aaron (letutor) about it, he's been looking into them as well. He's the Craigslist mastah!

Interesting. Didn't know such a thing existed. Is it a program, or a script, or...? Curious. Does Craigslist allow it? Right now I am just going city to city, occasionally posting up a different-worded link.

Another option would be to type up a general posting, and turn it into a .gif and post it up to each city with just garbled letters as the post. I've seen that before.

Quick Google Search comes up with these utilities:
    craygo.com
looks like the shareware version of craygo

    I'm sure there are others...

Just a quick update... then I'll stop doing daily updates :)

    Yesterday:
    185 impressions
    $3.97 + .44 in custom search revenue = $4.41

Analytics says visits went down from 45 to 40, and page views from 76 to 59... but revenue went up from 3.73 total yesterday.

    I'll take that! :)

Of course only $0.38 today on 2 clicks but 117 impressions. Alas.

I'm discovering analytics and adsense are a little bit behind. Not instant updates. Like the other day, Thursday, was 92 visits and 161 pageviews rather than what I originally had said. Revenue was $1.77 yesterday instead of $0.38. Weird?

That's some REALLY good traffic for a new site. You've got a great site on your hands. When you've got a potential gold mine on your hands just work on that one only until it's a perfect as it can get.

You know the theory 1 million sites that earn $1 a day = 1 million dollars

That's stupid because who can manage a million sites. I say until you get that site running like a champion boxer on coke that you should only focus on that site. I mean in just a week you are earning $15 a day. What if it were earning $100 a day x 365. That would be really good secondary income.

    Shit I'd take $100/day :P

I dunno if I just got lucky with one user running multiple queries and clicking ads, or what. So far today I'm only at 25 impressions and no clicks, 1 search with 1 click for $0.32. So it fluctuates obviously. I just about had a brick come out of me when I saw a double digit number for one day yesterday.

Finally got approved to Apartments.com's commission junction... added that to the site.

Since I started with this and posting on Craigslist:

    Adsense Content: $36.21
    Adsense Search: $17.18
    Total: $53.39

Of course I've put some effort into it and it hasn't just been easy. I still need to build up the backlinks somehow, but for now the Craigslist is working. I have had a few ads pulled...

My theory is that people should focus on the niche markets that are existing inside a larger service. For example, PlentyOfFish really exploited the dating section of Craigslist. Sure there are some twists and turns, but focusing on a niche allows you to really focus on features for that specific category. Another example is Etsy's exploitation of the Arts and Crafts section of eBay, or StubHub's exploitation of event tickets.

My startup is looking forward to exploiting wanted ad listings (think "opposite of eBay"). There are millions of listings per year spread out across the internet (and Craigslist), but no real dedicated service.

Our goal isn't to compete with current seller-to-buyer marketplaces, just supplement them.

With wanted ads, it's essentially the buyer seeking a seller ... Or people that want to entertain offers from multiple sellers. We're taking it one step further by introducing an offer method similar to reverse-auctioning, but not as strict.

The categories will be built by the people using a pretty unique drill-down tagging interface that I've wireframed. So if a user decides that they are looking for a new house in X location, they can quickly create a listing and categorize it. A seller can then quickly locate that potential buyer, and display their offering. RSS is also going to be baked in so that a seller can be notified when specific tags are being used (i.e. someone selling cars would select notification for all tags containing "cars").

Unlike eBay, the supply will never exceed the demand - something that will really appeal to sellers. The market is already there for buyers, as indicated by the number of wanted ads.

We're currently in the development stage.

EDIT: Feel free to move this post if needed. I really don't want to hijack Kevin's thread.

    Busted!

All of my findrentals postings have been "staff deleted" over at Craigslist. Oops... :)

I was posting in the Housing section under apartments and vacation rentals. I am going to try putting something up under Services, since that is what I am providing. Hoping I don't get banned...

Ah well. It was a good run while it lasted. I've earned $64.64 since 1/30 on one site.

I guess the next step is to continue to put up content on findrentals, find another way to promote the site and garner backlinks (ideas welcome), develop DubaiRental and FindTimeshares and connect all of the sites.

As I said, ideas welcome. I can put up Craigslist ads. Developing a backlink program is a completely different deal...

Man, that blows... How has it affected your traffic stats?

    There are a couple things I always worry about when launching;

    1) How to get the initial influx of users
    2) How to keep those users coming back

You're initial influx was via Craigslist - did you get any return traffic (i.e. second-time users)? Do you suppose there was any word-of-mouth going on?

I've seen sites that have been featured on TC get so much traffic that they end up getting knocked off line... Sure that initial spike is good, but the majority of services don't see returning users. I guess that all depends on a few things (your user demographics vs demographics of TC, service usability, etc).

Just some food for thought on site promotion.

Traffic has come to a standstill, which was to be expected. The site isn't currently really setup for return traffic. I can only type up or put up so many articles at one time. It's just a standard 'blog' by a standard guy.

I guess it is time for your bread and butter SEO/promotion techniques. Which takes a lot of time.

I am getting a handful of type-ins per day... but my earnings were a nice $0.04 versus a rolling average of ~$5.00/day w/content+search.

    Ah, well...

I submitted some stuff over to blog.sellsiusrealestate.com, as they let you do blog pr announcements. And I'm considering buying some TLA's in related sites to kick up the linkbacks... but that is costly. Want to stick to mostly free right now.

Forget about the TLAs. You're nowhere near the stage where they would have any impact on your relevance in search results.

I think your next steps would be to customize the theme a bit, then integrate the ads so they flow a little better.

I agree with Travis. TLA will not have a significant ROI if any at all. Look to build pillar articles that will be the staple in driving regular traffic to your site.

Pillar Articles are ones that will address common questions, concerns, or other queries that users may search for.

Then afterwards focus on Spike articles. Posts that would get noticed on Digg or something similar and would give you momentary increases in traffic.

Last keep finding free forums, blogs, directories, and classifieds that will allow you to post your website link.

Don't pay for anything at this point.

Last just make your website as user friendly as possible. Maybe offer some form of e-book for $5 that would inform renters of their legal rights and other stuff.
