Eric's mentioned that he's been working out like a mad man for the past 6 weeks or so. I have to get back into gear and commit to a regimine.

Does anyone have a routine that's worked for them? Or any tips to stay on track?

What are you trying to do? Trim fat, bulk up? Problem areas?

You need to get a weight bench if you don't already have one. Do you have any cardio equipment at home? I have a recumbent bike and it's the perfect warm up tool before lifting.

Do whichever one you enjoy the most for 30 minutes in the morning (bike or treadmill). You won't believe how amazing you feel even if you hardly got any sleep. If you feel up to it, do some light workout on the bowflex after your warm up.

That's how I start my morning off. Once you make it a habit it's easy to do, in fact it's enjoyable - very easy to stick with it.

Find another 30 minutes in the evening to do it again. It's OK if it's a lighter run/ride - just as long as you do it. The key is not to push yourself so hard that you HATE it and it feels daunting. Make it enjoyable. Read a book or watch TV while you're doing your cardio.

For bulking/toning - just work on the areas you need the most improvement with the bowflex and make sure you're getting a lot of protein on those days.

Anyways, that's what I do and it's working and I enjoy it. The key is not making it daunting. Work up slowly to harder paces on the bike/treadmill. You'll be more motivated to work out harder on the bowflex if you do some cardio beforehand so that's the key - get that down and the rest should follow.

Oh - and eat well. 90% diet, 10% exercise. You can run all day long and then blow it with a bag of Skittles. Eat fresh food, chicken, and if you like beef jerky it's a great snack to have to curb hunger w/low calories and loads of protein.

Toning and bulking up are the opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to working out. You can try accomplish both with the right diet and plan. Say 30% cardio and 70% lifting if you want to bulk. Vice versa for leaning up. Just don't expect to gain 30lbs in muscle and lose 10% of the body fat content.

A forum I used to frequent daily when I was in college is bodybuilding.com (not really for bodybuilders). Helped me bulk up some 20lbs. Now I'm looking to get the abs back that I had in high school. Gonna be tough...I ran track 6 days a week for 4 years back then.

Also, www.wannabebig.com - that's a good forum. Doesn't sound like you're wanting to turn into a meathead though, just get some definition and churn out some body fat %.

I'm not an student or expert of nutrition/fitness - but I know what works for me. If it works for you, great, if not...sorry :(

I've come down a long road of weight loss and just sharing what's helped me shed 1/3rd of my body weight.

The drug method: (purely for humor)

Tone/lose fat: Meth and Coke will probably shed some pounds for ya. Worked for Anna Nichole Smith, Nicole Richy (sp), and that one Olsen twin.

Bulk up: Marijuana and/or Anabolic Roids: Could gain massive amounts of weight and strength in a matter of a few months. Worked for Arnold back in the day, Sly, Bonds, and the really fat neighbor kids that smells like weed.

Running is one of the best cardio exercises to lose weight, but I absolutely hate it. Mainly because it's so borrrrring. Try a new sport that involves a bit of competition and time seems to fly so much faster. :)

Also, check out the fitness sections of Men's Health. Try to stick to compound excerises as well. (workouts that stimulate multiple muscles) Do chin-ups, push-ups, set-ups....Go old school.

Also, i know this sounds crazy, but mentally workout. Imagine working out, lifting weights, and running... it will increase your strength by 15% and make you feel more satisfied.

And most importantly, have fun with your workout..if you dont enjoy it, you wont stick to it.

I used to use the Bowflex often, when I had the time. It worked like a charm.

There's a six week program that comes with it. You do 30 minutes of training on it 3 days a week. But you can't do any cardio whatsoever. The diet is extremely strict as well. But from what I've read, it's worth the trouble.

I gotta find the time, maybe next week, to give this program a try.
