Check out FreeByte.com - they have a ton of links to free software. It's an ugly site, but seems to be updated.

I checked it out and it had some good stuff. Anyone have any opinions on these image editors or drawing tools? I just need something basic to crop images for my blog and to draw graphics and stuff.

Are you on PC or Mac? On my Mac I use ImageWell - it's awesome for blog photo editing/uploading.

For PC I'm not sure. Try GIMP.

I'll always recommend Photoshop for any image editing needs. You can download the trial and give it a try.

For free image editing, definitely GIMP. It's the best free alternative to Photoshop.

How is the trial version of photoshop?

The main problem is that I don't need something that's super powerful. I just want to be able to basic editing. My microsoft image editor sucks.

For basic editing GIMP is all you need. If you just need to crop images for your website, adjust image quality, that app is your best bet.

Photoshop has a bit of a learning curve, but in the end is the app you'll eventually use if you involve yourself in the design process or want to take your design abilities further.

Start with GIMP and work your way up.

I'm trying to download GIMP from their website but my virus protection is saying that the setup file contains a virus.

I'm sure the GIMP website is trustworthy could my virus software be confused or should I not download it?

There shouldn't be any problems with GIMP. Does your virus scan list the virus that it's detecting? Google the name of it and see if any virus sites have it red-flagged.

I did a search on symantec and it said they had no info on the virus name. It seems to some sort of trojan.

Our search engine was unable to find any pages related to

    w32/backdoor.zoj.

If anyone knows anything about it let me know.

Hmmmm.........backdoor usually isn't a good term when it comes to viruses, lol. Maybe it would be wise to hold off on installation until you're able to get word from someone on the inside of GIMP.

Post an inquiry on this forum and see what they say:

first thing i recommend doing before installing gimp is:
    1. Install firefox
    2. install ad-aware se
    3. make firefox your default browser
    4. run ad-aware, clear anything it finds.
    5. then install a program called HiJack This!, run it, copy the log into a forum at www.TechSupportForum.com they will access your log and tell you if your computer is clean.

That simple routine should keep you safe from potential virus'.

Just came across an article that got dugg, comparing gimp and photoshop. Not the greatest run-down, but still covers some pros and cons of the app.
