Like a lot of programmers I wrote CoverHunt.com in my spare time on a rainy night. I’m one of those people who like to have an immaculate music collection - with every song having the right titles for the song, artist, and album, as well as the right album covers since they are pretty useful and make it more fun to browse through.

After trying to organise all of my music in iTunes and having to go through the same tedious process over and over again to get the cover artwork I decided to make a simple little app that could do most of the work for me.

CoverHunt gives you a list of results of free album cover artwork for your search, with the full sized image ready to just drag and drop straight into iTunes to add to your songs before syncing to your iPod.

I created the site in August and had forgotten about it until I had to find a cover today. While I was there I had a look at the statistics for the site and I was a little shocked - there were 6267 searches last month, with 678 visitors loading an average of 10 searches per visit.

It is quite cool to think that I haven’t really publicised the site at all but there are people there searching for all sorts of music - from Placebo and John Denver to Charlotte Church and Gwen Stefani.

I've been thinking of making some updates to the site since it is obviously filling a need - what do you guys think?

    Try it now - CoverHunt.com.

Wow, I just tried it out and the search function is really quick and easy to use.
You thought of monetizing the site, maybe with affiliate links to song downloads? I reckon that would go down really well.

    Anyway, DUGG!

It's good to see that it is useful to people, and thanks to everyone who has dugg the link.

I hadn't thought about monetising it until a few days ago actually, when I saw that people are actually going there - I'd never actively promoted it so I didn't expect any traffic. I have a few plans now, but I don't want to convert the site into a banner-whore since its primary reason for being is to find my covers!

Thanks for the suggestions, does anyone else have anything they would like implemented?

I wouldn't make it a banner whore, but I would definitely put ads on the site, maybe an AdSense or AdBrite image banner up top and a link set on the bottom.

No banners yet as I had to give the url structure a facelift, they are pretty now. I've added iTunes rss to the homepage to hopefully create an organically growing site for the engines. I think they may need a bit more dynamic text content on the individual pages but that is possible. More to come another day..

$150, but took a while to get the dead tree in the mail so theres another $50 waiting in the account. I think I'm starting to like this Adsense thing. Although, TLA has sent in a few bucks as well and it looks a lot less spammy.

    Congrats on the first cheque.

I enjoy TLA payments much more than Google. They automatically deposit them in my Paypal account each month, and I can easily see my earnings for the month.
