I have a personal blog that I have no intention of turning into an additional revenue stream - but the idea of a blog that produces a substantial income is intrigueing to me...

Anyone out there own/operate a profitable blog?

I am trying hard to create some income from blogs - I started http://www.mylaptopguide.com with the intention of making some money, I made $50 in the first week (I don't think that's possible to repeat right away). I have since sold it and moved on.

Now I am working on http://www.thepokerblog.net

I am hoping that this can earn me $2,500 a month within the next 12 months.

Blogs are not profitable because of Google AdSense or other advertising forms unless you can average hundreds of thousands unique visitors a month. The key is to find a niche and focus on providing quality content for that niche and integrate affiliate links.

    I agree with Ben.

Create a blog around a niche ... add informative content and squeeze in affiliate links or advertising.

I really like the look of the poker blog that you have started. Good luck with the sale of my laptopguide.com!

I think if you have crazy content then you could make money from a blog, I read this guy's messageboard his name is "Tucker Max" I am sure some of you have heard of him, but I know he get's money off of his messageboard that he has going along with his blog and stuff, and he is like a quasi internet celeb because of his crazy stories, so if you had a life like his that you were talking about and every story you could embelish on and make sound great then I think it would be possible, but I think you would probably have to do banners or something on the site so you can get paid for the unique hit's etc.

I started a blog three days ago, and it is already profitable (that is not saying much, because I only spent $9 on the domain name, and I am using existing web space). The intriguing thing is that I have averaged 500 users a day, thus far, and my effective CPM is about 10 times as high as the Google AdSense average.

It is about the content. I was reading around, and I guess food related topics pay much less per click that other things... so I am not sure how this all works, but people have been researching the hell out of some very mundane data to find underlying trends.

This whole blogging for money thing is really starting to sound like a good idea. What are some topics you think can be a good money maker?

Anything with a niche. If you come up with an idea, search around and see how many blogs you can find that have quality content on the topic. If you can supply excellent and fresh content, you will be able to bring in at least some money. Thats what I am trying to do with my outdoor blog, Outdoorness (www.professionalgfx.net/outdoor), which will soon be at www.outdoorness.com and then I will start the heavy promotion and customize the theme they way I want.

If you are into affiliate marketing you can head over to Comission Junction and browse some affiliate links - look for topics you know someting about so that you can provide rich, unique content. Then start integrating affiliates.

Also if you get "big" you can get sponsors or partnerships with some companies.

The key to a profitable blog is that it needs to be updated regularly with good, unique content. Simply linking to other stories will not get you return visitors.

Check out Blog Explosion. It is a free service where you can build traffic to your blog. You browse blogs and earn credits. The credits are hits for others to browse your blog. I am trying it out. It may be a decent thing to get some starter traffic... a lot of it will be a waste. It will not be the best traffic for my blog, I am certain... but it could be fine for others with non-technical blogs.

It has given me 45 more hits today. My blog started off with a lot of traffic. It has certainly dropped off. People wanted to check it out, but there is little content so far. I use the Samba mailing list to announce new guides and such, and I always get a nice surge of traffic from that. I need to write part two of my OpenLDAP guide.

I am making a couple of dollars a day. For the Sambadmin blog to be a hit, I need for it to be THE location for Samba documentation. That will take care of itself, it just needs time. I started another blog yesterday, on a whim. The Conservative Conservationist. The idea is just doing some things are nice the the environment and the wallet. Pretty simple. I figure that I will get more relevant traffic from Blog Explosion that way.

Write a blog post about mesolothomia (or anything that has lawyer or web host ads) and you'll get like $2/click.

If you Google catches you posting about something random to increase CPC they'll get upset with you.

They have already been sued once for click fraud (that I know of) and I'm guessing they're watching for it even closer now.

If you can prove the post wasn't random, say you have a relative with mesothelioma or something like that, then they'd probably have to let it slide - but if you run a blog about Web 2.0 and you post about mesothelioma one time, they'll notice eventually.

Just make an entire blog about it... then it isn't random, and you will have higher keyword density.
