I'm currently 'fake' investing through Scottrade's demo. As soon as I graduate in December I plan to put some money into a mutual fund, and we'll see what happens from there.

Fake investing? They have a play-money investing program?

Sure enough. You get $100,000 in fake money, and do with it as you please with the stock market. Pretty interesting... and sometimes frustrating! ;)

How delayed are the stock quotes? I remember in 8th grade we did something like this, and because the quotes were delayed 20 minutes I stayed home two or three times and just watched MSNBC. Whenever a stock went up a fair amount I would hurry in and buy it before the quotes had been updated. Granted this is not what you want to do if practicing investing, I'm just curious as to whether they have improved that facet of these programs.

I think it is still delayed 20 minutes.

Hey guys
Yep, it's true. I know because I am a lo$er myself.
I considered myself an investor well before I had the ability to make informed decisions. I read a few articles and a book on technical analysis, and thought I was ready to take the plunge.... and plunge I certainly did. Unfortunately I hit my head on the diving board too.
Considering I am young and money is quite scarce for me at the moment, I don't know why I did jump in and buy a 3-4k share portfolio with a pseudo-trading plan "in my head". Resultantly, I've lost $1.5k and a bit of my ego.
Lesson learnt. Read up. Paper trade. Establish a firm strategy. Discipline, discipline, discipline.
Or save up for property. Word on the street is that is the more sensible option for young folk anyways... but the lure of share trading and 'instant' profits will continue to play havoc on the emotionally driven players out there.. be warned!

real estate for me as well.
As for stocks, I only buy into companies that I am somehow connected to.

A lil bit of everything. Stock/bond portfolio, mutual funds, and aggressively paying down my mortgage.
Right now my $$$ is going to the mortgage. My goal is to pay it off within just 4 years, so Im making the double-up payments plus the yearly lump-sum payments.
The house should continue appreciating... plus its tax exempt...

Very true.
I do a little investing, and I could care less about my execution times or quote speeds.
I also do a little trading, which, I might add, is NOT to be confused with investing. Trading requires information that is as close to real-time as possible, and so I get full real-time Level II quotes through Power Etrade. It is some pure speculation, and also some playing of the spread.
Anyway, I've been messing around with Natural Gas stocks recently and doing pretty well. My speculative "messing around" money is only about 1/50th of my portfolio value, the rest is very conservatively invested, so I can sleep at night.
