Where the hell is Matt?

Let’s start with an easier question: who the hell is Matt? Chances are if you own a television, computer, or a pair of eyes, you’ve seen Matt. He doesn’t co-host the Today show, isn’t an ex-star of Friends. No, he’s a common man that’s far from common.

Matt’s 29 years old, had a career many of us wished for when we were teens—playing video games—and was quite content with his life, until February of 2003. That’s when he decided to try something different. Extremely different.

He quit his job in Brisbane, Australia and would travel the World until his wallet ran dry. While on the trip, a friend suggested he dance everywhere he went and record it on his camera. And so he did.

This not only grabbed the media’s attention, it also landed him a contract with Stride long-lasting gum. This contract involved another trip around the World. But this time, they’d foot the bill.

At the start of 2006 his journey began, again. In the past 6 months he’s traveled through 39 countries on all 7 continents, dancing in each and every one of them.

The music helps, but it’s still just what Matt did, that will make the hair on your arms rise. You can view the video here, if you can’t see it below. You can also view his first video here.

Matt’s story is just that. It’s a story. A fantastic, true, inspiring, emotional story. Great stories will always be shared, just like I’m doing with you.

Imagine the risk of quitting your job, packing up all your things and just hopping on a plane. Imagine the risks in each of the countries; not knowing where you’re going or what’ll happen. Sounds great to me.

There’s a little Matt inside us all. He just wants to have fun. He’s the one that keeps asking you, “if you don’t like what you’re doing, why do you keep doing it?

Just dancing in public, for no particular reason, is something that we should all aspire to do. It’ll feel awkward because no one else is doing it, and people might say you’re embarrassing yourself. Those are the exact reasons you should do it.

Break the pattern and find your dance, whatever it may be, and be sure to share it with all of us.
