Equity in exchange for sweat capital sounds very exciting when you are attempting to crawl your way to the top. (I would question top of what?) However, the real "GRUNT" at any board room table comes from those with hard cash at risk... only they can decide when to cash in the chips.

Personally, I would prefer a beginning, a middle, and an end, to every transaction.

I would far prefer to see my effort and skills rewarded by performance based bonuses, in cash, so I have control A.S.A.P.

This is a great topic and deserves much ongoing discussion.

It is definitely a risk, especially when the person offering the services is working to pay the rent. I would love to give my services away to a company in return for some equity but unfortunately those fees are what feeds me. I do see the benefits but for me personally it would have to be an ideal situation!

I too am a big fan of this approach. The best part is having every member of the team giving their absolute 100% best effort because their bottom line depends on the overall success of the business. You can't get that kind of work and focus out of hourly employees or rate contracted subs.

We're going to continue to see this more and more in the coming years.
