Really good post! To add to your purple cow point, you're right you don't have to give something away for free, but if your customers feel like they are getting more value out you then you are out of them they will keep coming back. There is a really good article in this month's edition of wired titled Free!. It talks how it's becoming best practice to give stuff away.

Great post, at our company we try to incorporate everything you mentioned here. Especially the follow up.

We encourage our staff (with incentives) to think of ways to help our clients create more business or reduce their costs online and then make it a point to try and contact every customer at least quarterly to review all the ideas we have come up with.

Some of the ideas are free and don't require additional costs for the customer and some (Based on the amount of work) do require some additional investment by the client but at least they know we are actively thinking about their needs and trying to develop creative ways to solve their problems.

The clients seem to appreciate it and I, as one of the business partners, love being able to provide a service many are not.

Also generate more value and visibility by partnering with other reputable companies (and other kinds of orgs.).
Then you can become their top-of-mind choice - becaue you are one-of-a-kind (with the right partners and partnering methods

Thanks! It's incredible how noticable it is when you walk into a place and receive excellent service in all aspects of your visit. It gives you a good feeling and sticks out in your mind. Customers will remember how they're treated.

Good post. It's all about forming a legitimate relationship with the customer. If they trust and respect you, then they're going to be more faithful to your brand. And as a consequence, you'll get a nice bit of worth-of-mouth marketing as well.

With the zeitgeist of social networking and marketing in full force, corporations are trying to, at least superficially, connect with their target market more than ever. If you can do it better and more genuinely than the next guy, you'll be ahead of the game in no time.

I couldn't agree more. It all starts from the management down on how you treat your customers. Its a vibe in your workplace that shows when you really do care.

As a customer those are the kinds of places and people that I want to deal with. I know they care and have my best interest at heart. Also it makes it fun!! Something a lot of companies seem to ignore, rather they are penny counting to manage their bottom line.

The focus on customers and being a fun and unique place to be is some of the best marketing you can do! Stop counting your pennies and start focusing on your customers, the rewards will be greater!
