Douche Bag — Our first official Wordpress plugin

Most people are nice in person. For some reason, when they have a monitor hiding their face, a few of them act like douchebags. We love the community here and are glad that we don’t have any of these DBs. But when you go popular on certain social bookmarking sites, they seem to arise.
So we created a tool just for those rare instances. It’s a simple and straight forward plugin for Wordpress, called Douche Bag.
When you add the tag to the beginning of a comment, our plugin will automatically insert the Douche Bag.
It only takes a minute to install
Add a copy of the Douche image to your server
Place the “douche.png” image within the root directory of your Wordpress installation. (ex. /www or /html depending on your server) If you have Wordpress installed in a sub-directory, place the image in that main folder.
Add the following code to your theme’s stylesheet:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 | img.douche { border:none !important; padding:none !important; background:none !important; float:right; margin-left:5px !important; } |
Activate the plugin
Like you would any other in your Wordpress admin.
Add the douche code to the beginning of any comment you think deserves the honour, just like so:
How to edit a comment
If your theme doesn’t have an “edit comment” link next to each comment, you can locate the douche worthy remarks in your admin. You’ll find that section at something like: http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php.
That’s it.
This deterrent should help in keeping your blog comments clean and let you have a little fun as well. Instead of letting a douchebag ruin your day, use our little plugin to put them to shame, just like below.

August 28th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
YGG does it again. You should make some additional images for those who want to spice it up a bit. Mild, Medium, and Extra Spicy.
Looks like this is gonna be fun.
August 28th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Glad you like it Aaron.
We may release an icon pack with a variety of Douche Bags a bit down the road.
Everyone is more than welcome to make their own Douche Bag that matches the styling of their site.
Simply save your version as “douche.png” and overwrite the default one on your server.
August 28th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
PWNED!
(try it out on me)
August 28th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
LOL, AWESOME!
This’ll be one of the first plugins I add when I move over to Wordpress.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:31 pm
Man, you lucky bastards get on Digg all the time. Anyways, brilliant idea, I’m definitely going to install this.
I have to say, you guys post some damn link worthy stuff.
August 28th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
It’s not really luck, it’s good content and elbow grease.
Let me know if you want someone to be a douche bag on your blog so you can test it out, I’m game.
Thanks for the kind words too!
August 28th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
hahahahaha.. i love it travis.
August 28th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
To see this puppy in serious action, check out the comments on the Britney Spears/Mondonation post
August 28th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Perfect! I caught the beta version in action, good to see the full one get released. ;)
Note to self: don’t be a douche bag on YGG. Must divert douchage elsewhere.
August 28th, 2007 at 3:13 pm
If you want to mark one person who is always a douche by default, you could always do this:
if ($comment->comment_author_email == "douches email") { echo "<!--douche-->"; }
Right before you display the comment.
August 28th, 2007 at 3:17 pm
That’s an extra evil idea Connor. I love it!
If and when we release the second version (it’s only been hours damnit), we’ll see if we can enable such an option.
August 28th, 2007 at 3:21 pm
Yes Connor, your idea should bestow ‘nondouche’ status upon your e-mail.
August 28th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
Another idea is you tag someone a db too many times the bag turns into a super man type logo with a db instead of an s and they become super douchbag ….lol!
August 28th, 2007 at 7:12 pm
God I love this place :)
August 28th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
I seee other plugins that could spawn from this like a “post whore” plugin for people who post too much, or random comments that really do not bring anything to the table.
August 28th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
I see more of these being released on YGG in the future :)
August 28th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
HEhe
August 28th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Great plugin! :)
August 28th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
You got it Mr. Test. lol
August 28th, 2007 at 8:26 pm
Bow Chica Wah-Wah
August 28th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
**lots of douchebag swearing**
August 28th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
As you can see, you can be pretty creative with the Douche Bag plugin. The above douche worthy comment deserved and received a double DB.
Simply insert the douche tag twice! :)
August 28th, 2007 at 8:46 pm
This is the most crap plugin ever made :@
August 28th, 2007 at 8:50 pm
People,
Take a look through the comments before you try and post something nasty. You’ll see examples of previous Douche Bag comments. The plugin works, and I don’t really want to have to insert a hundred more of these.
Unfortunately, for the people that want to swear, we haven’t finished the Dickhead plugin yet, so I’m just going to delete your comment. Thank you.
August 28th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Sorry travis =’(
Didn’t see your comment before I wen’t wild.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:01 pm
No problem Oli. Your’s wasn’t that bad. No harm done.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Can the commenter “douchbag” themselves?
August 28th, 2007 at 9:09 pm
guess not :P
August 28th, 2007 at 9:09 pm
This is awesome! I’ve read some blogs that do need Douche Bag label.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:12 pm
self douche bag
August 28th, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Yes you can Chris, as you can probably tell from the couple of exaggerated posts above yours.
Simply add the douche tag to the beginning of your comment.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
rofl
August 28th, 2007 at 9:41 pm
If it looks like your comment was deleted, it was because you were an ultimate douchebag, and we deleted it.
Ease up on the tag abuse and we’ll hold off on closing comments until tomorrow. Thanks.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
rofflez?
August 28th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
This is a great idea. I thought of something similar a few years ago, but allowed other users to tag comments with a few different labels. Heh, none were quite as harsh as Douche Bag, though.
Oddly enough, I just wrote about it just yesterday at the end of this rant: Get A Life: The Most Annoying Guy on the Internet.
August 28th, 2007 at 10:14 pm
I made myself a dbag!
August 28th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
Very nice plugin.
Hmm…I think I am going to try to have a reverse type of deal using Connor Wilson’s idea and a image of a star or thumbs up or maybe like #1 stunna glitter graphics. I can have some VIP guests on my blog.
Any ideas on how to keep visitors from hacking it and posting a million douche bags?
August 28th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
[...] YoungGoGetters has created a Wordpress plug-in that lets blog administrators add a Douchebag icon beside comments that are beyond annoying. The plug-in is easy enough to install. Once you’ve installed the plug-in, you can edit readers’ comments to insert the Douchebag icon. While this may be amusing to most, it’s really meant as a way to help curb a bad string of comments, which often starts with just one. [...]

Levi, this plugin will still work perfectly for you.
Rename the < --douche--> string and filename to something less obvious and that only you will know. Then use that to insert your more positive image whenever you wish.
August 28th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
Nice plugin
August 29th, 2007 at 12:23 am
I love this plugin! I don’t hink I’ll ever use it on my blog but I’m sure there’s a few places I could implement it..
Thanks..
August 29th, 2007 at 12:53 am
All I can say is …. AWESOME!
August 29th, 2007 at 12:54 am
Only problem is that any commenter can insert the douchebag …..
*EDIT BY ADMIN* – This was filled with a bunch of bull shit. Sidenote: You don’t have to share the “douche” code with anyone, make up what you want and don’t let the cat out of the bag and then it wont be a problem. It’s unfortunate we have such a shit ton of assholes abusing it on this post. I guess that was to be expected.

Funny idea, but rather poor implementation: I’d make it so that blog admins see a “Douche this” button right next to a comment and it would add the douche bag with one click, and no cumbersome & manual comment editing.

I think there is one thing that might become a problem
People might always post comments and purposely put the douchebag tag in the front, and they might do that all the time, as to wear it as a sign of honor, or they might just say “I’m douchebagging myself, because your going to douchebag me anyway just because you don’t agree with what I’m saying”, effectively killing the douchebag thing.
It’s kind of like on digg, when people post comments that they know might cause controversy, and they say at the beginning to just digg me down, but a lot of times people might read the comment and start giving them thumbs up.
Just put it like this. It could quickly turn into something that is irrelevant, and something that would be annoying, because if you have 20 comments and 10 of those comments have douche tags, you would either have a respectable blog littered with douche icons, or you would have to go through each post and edit it out, which just creates a problem in that you have to do more work.
Just my 2 cents.
(see how I have tagged myself as a douche? it basically means you can’t do it now).

Genius…
Who was the original Douche bag who inspired you to create this plugin Travis?
August 29th, 2007 at 7:23 am
Our Britney Spears post had quite a few Douche Bag worthy comments, but the one in our Entreprenews this week sealed the deal. Once I saw that the first word that came to mind was douchebag, and so it was born. :)
August 29th, 2007 at 7:54 am

This plugin has a lot of potential and I’d love to see it developed further.
As someone previously suggested you could create an admin section where you can add email addresses and an admin only link (maybe right beside the edit comment link) to mark a post as a db would rock. You would have to keep the code a secret though, or it could be abused…
